L.V. Beekeepers sponsor Honey Bee Day event

Honey bees pollinate one third of food supplies and a honey bee only produces one-twelfth a teaspoon of honey in her summer lifetime of 6-8 weeks.

Learn these and other facts about honey bees at a free educational event sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Beekeepers Association 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 20 at Pool Wildlife Sanctuary, 3701 Orchid Place, Emmaus.

The National Honey Bee Day event will take place rain or shine.

Honey bees are diminishing and they need everyone’s help to reverse this trend.

Statistics show 44 percent of honey bees across the nation died during fall and winter 2015-16.

There are half the number of beekeepers as there were 25 years ago and one-third less beehives as there were 25 years ago.

Backyard beekeepers living in towns, cities and suburban areas comprises 98 percent of all beekeepers.

The balance is full-time or commercial beekeepers.

Those attending the event will observe a working observation hive with the Queen Bee laying eggs.

In addition, local beekeepers will give presentations.

Every hour, from noon to 3 p.m., beekeepers will demonstrate the extraction of raw honey from the hive.

Fresh, raw honey bottled from the honey extractor and other honey b-products will be available to purchase. Apiary tours will also be given.

Youngsters of all ages can experience role playing inside and outside the beehive in the fun and educational game ”Imagine Me … A Busy, Busy Honey Bee.”

Children will receive honey sticks and coloring books.
