In the spring of 2014, Emmaus High School juniors Nina Rowan and Kayla Manzarrez developed a website devoted to providing their peers with fashion and beauty insights and information.

Rowan and Manzarrez, who currently attend the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, left a legacy which continues to grow. Their original concept has flowered into a club that produces monthly online articles and annually publishes Buzz Magazine.

Entirely student staffed, Buzz Magazine presents articles focusing on fashions for young men and women, beauty tips and healthy living as well as special features on individual students with a flair for fashion. The executive staff for the club includes Liz Kleppinger, director of fashion; Lindsay Horner, director of beauty; Emily Yen, director of art and technology; Maria Dimou, director of lifestyle; and Lauren Hodgen and Samantha Meyer, co-directors of marketing. Bridget Doklan serves as club advisor.

Club members organize themselves according to their interests and talents. Each new member chooses the section in which he or she wishes to work. Ideas are submitted for approval and the writers produce one article a month. Most appear on the Buzz Magazine website, though some are assigned specifically for inclusion in the print version.

The club also sponsors fall and spring clothing swaps and produced a successful fashion show this past academic year. Attendance exceeded expectations and Hodgen commented the staff was “[surprised] by how many students are fashion oriented.”

Four student designers exhibited original creations.

The magazine’s staff emphasized all aspects of the event – modeling, makeup, hairstyling, photography, etc. – were planned and executed by students.

“It’s all about letting EHS students exploit their talents,” Meyer said.

In spite of a few growing pains as the staff members blended their individual tastes into a team vision, the club has enjoyed a productive year and its participants are excited about future projects.
