‘Birds in Flight’ soar at library’s Aug. 20 summer reading finale
The finale for the Emmaus Public Library’s summer reading program, “On Your Mark, Get Set…Read,” will be held 2 p.m. Aug. 20 on the library lawn, 11. E. Main St., Emmaus. The program features birds from the New York Bronx Zoo show, “Birds in Flight.” The birds will be free to fly about the library’s large property and green space demonstrating their natural abilities and tendencies and at times may interact with the people in the audience. The program is sponsored by the Emmaus Lioness Club, Friends of the Emmaus Public Library and a generous library patron.
More than 300 youngsters signed up to participate in the reading program this summer. If you haven’t already, there is still time to register. Congratulations to all the summer readers. I hope you found many adventures on the pages of the books you read.
The library is offering the following programs in August: drop in story time for all ages 10:30 a.m. Aug. 3, 10 and 17; Monday morning movies will be shown 11 a.m. Aug. 1, 8 and 15; “The Game is On” (board and card games for fourth graders and older), 2 p.m. Aug. 4, 11 and 18; block parties, 11 a.m. Aug. 2 and 4 p.m. Aug. 30 and action games for sixth graders and older, 10 a.m. Aug. 6.
Local author Farmer Bonnie with Phyllis Palamaro will read from her series of stories for students in grade three and younger, 10:30 a.m. Aug. 9.
A representative from the Emmaus Ice Hockey Club will talk about hockey in the area, describe how to play and where to sign up 2 p.m. Aug. 16.
There will be a family film shown 6 p.m. Aug. 18 and a movie matinee 1 p.m. Aug. 25.
Literary Lunch Jr. will be held noon Aug. 23; Literary Lunch noon Aug. 17 and Teen Read 7 p.m. Aug. 4. Registration is required.

Did you know the Emmaus Historical Society has a showcase at the Emmaus Public Library? During August it is filled with vintage toys. The display is changed periodically. Displays at the historical society’s museum, 218 Main St., are also changed periodically. Museum displays include the complete collection of Emmaus Foundry and Machine trivets, youth civic organizations’ displays, military displays and an Emmaus Post Office display. The museum is open noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays.
The Emmaus Historical Society will hold an antique appraisal program and 50/50 raffle 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 24 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Fifth and Chestnut streets. Certified appraisers will provide verbal appraisals for one or two items. The appraisers will give valuable information about the collectible or antique. It is requested that you arrive one-half hour prior to the meeting to unpack your item. There is a ticket cost per item, which may be purchased at the door or at the museum during open hours. I hope everyone is enjoying swimming at the Emmaus Community Pool. I think since the pool was not able to be used for several weeks made the community appreciate the treasure it is. The pool hours through Aug. 28 are daily noon to 8 p.m. The pool will be closed Aug. 29, 30, 31 and Sept. 1. It will open again noon to 8 p.m. Sept. 2, 3 and 4 and will be open noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 5. Aqua Zumba is offered 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Free Zumba classes continue at the Arts Pavilion 9 a.m. Saturdays.
Spend a pleasant evening at Emmaus Community Park listening to the popular Sunday concerts. Concerts during August are Aug. 7: the Red Hill Band; Aug. 14: the Steel Creek Band; Aug. 21: The Dueling Pianos and Aug. 28: Scott Marshall and the Hill Billy Souls. All concerts begin 6 p.m.
The Emmaus Farmers Market is held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday of each month through December. The market is held rain or shine at the KNBT parking lot, 235 Main St. A special program for children, “Let’s Grow Together,” will be held 1 p.m. Aug. 14. For information, visit www.emmausmarket.com.
The program for the Emmaus Garden Club’s Aug. 2 meeting is “Fresh Flower Arranging in Wegman’s Signature Style.” Wegman’s manager James Axiotis and designer Mary Holmgern will show visuals of the family farm in a new partnership where Wegman’s employees help to plant and harvest flowers. Holmgern will demonstrate distinctive design styles. The club meets noon for social time with the program beginning 12:30 p.m. followed by a business meeting at Faith Presbyterian Church, 3002 N. Second St.
The Emmaus Moravian Church, 146 Main St., will hold a back-to-school shop featuring gently used and some new clothes, shoes, sports equipment, backpacks and lunch boxes for youngsters in kindergarten through 12th grade. Also offered are new school supplies free as long as the supplies last. The shop is open to the community 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 20. Community youngsters are invited to attend the church’s Vacation Bible School 2016, “Deep Sea Discovery!” 9:30 a.m. to noon Aug. 12. The Emmaus 1803 House is currently seeking crafters/artists for its juried craft fair to be featured at its Oct. 1 A Very Merrie Halloween, a Halloween craft show and fall festival.
