New high school principal named

Whitehall-Coplay School Board approved the appointment of Nathan Davidson as the new Whitehall High School principal at its meeting Monday night.

Seven board members voted in favor of Davidson’s appointment. Board member Tina Koren voted no. Arthur Taschler Jr. was absent.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lorie Hackett introduced Davidson, speaking of his background and of the extensive interview process that included many parts of the district.

According to Hackett, “Davidson attended Central Catholic High School, received his bachelor’s in history and teaching certification from Susquehanna University, his master’s and principal’s certification from Wilkes University and his letter of eligibility from Edinboro University.”

He taught at Carlson Long Military Institute, in New Bloomfield, Pa., and Francis D. Raub Middle School and William Allen High School in Allentown, Hackett said. Davidson also was an assistant principal at William Allen High School.

When asked by The Press why she voted against the appointment, Koren said, “There are too many together,” referring to the 50-plus names all appointed at once.

In other business, the board approved the purchase of two school buses; both are from Wolfington Body Company Inc., Exton. The buses are 2017 models. One is a 77-passenger school bus with a cost of $82,951. The other is a 48-passenger flat floor lift school bus with a cost of $86,976.

All members present voted in favor of the buses, except for Patty Gaugler.

Gaugler told The Press after the meeting, “I’m only in favor of the 48-passenger bus. I didn’t feel we needed the other.”
