Board votes to continue Community Education

The Community Education Program will be continued for the 2016-17 school year in Northampton Area School District.

The NASD Board of Education voted 7-0, with two members absent at the June 27 meeting, to approve continuation of the program, with Margaret Schell again as coordinator at a stipend of $3,935.63 for the 2016-17 school year.

School directors also voted 7-0 at the June 27 meeting to approve:

• The resignations of Jessica Finlayson, assistant boys volleyball coach, effective June 7, and Carol O’Donnell, 12-month secretary, for retirement, effective July 29;

• The hiring of Joseph Provini, TPE English teacher, Northampton Area Middle School, effective Aug. 22, at $48,331.00, with benefits; Amy Grabfelder, short-term substitute elementary teacher, George Wolf Elementary School, effective Aug. 22, for the first marking period of the 2016-17 school year, at the daily rate of $125, with no benefits; and Ricky Knecht, school police officer, July 1-June 30, 2019, pending receipt of required documentation, at $38,000, with benefits;

• Unpaid leave of absence for Eugene Hatcher, May 25-June 30;

• Revised list of teachers and 1:1 instructional assistants to provide Extended School Year and Chapter 15-Section 504 Services for Summer 2016;

Melissa Davis, Leigh Zakutansky and Jason Winchenbach to visit Ludlow, Vt., along with 28 students, to ski at Okemo Mountain Resort, Feb. 3-5, 2017, at no cost to the district;

• Attendance of Gretchen Troxell and Jackie Grejda at 2016 Pennsylvania Community Transition Conference, State College, July 20-22, at an approximate district cost of $820.79, included in the 2016-17 curriculum budget;

• Textbook adoptions for the 2016-17 school year at a cost of $114,400.24. Textbook costs are included in the curriculum budget;

• Three-year service agreement with Oliver Fire Protection, King of Prussia, Montgomery County, with a 0-percent increase to test and inspect fire protection sprinkler systems at Franklin, Colonel John Siegfried and Washington elementary schools and Northampton Area High School, and a new annual fee for the new Northampton Area Middle School at $2,310 for 2016-17; $1,910 for 2017-18, and $1,910 for 2018-19;

• Three-year service agreement with Engines Inc., Northampton, for service to the district emergency generators July 1-June 30, 2019, at $8,470, for 2016-17; $5,165, for 2017-18, and $5,165, for 2018-19;

• District insurances for the 2016-17 fiscal year: property-casualty-boiler and machinery, Utica National, $144,390; automobile, Utica National, $25,799; umbrella liability, Utica Mutual, $21,977; school leaders errors and omissions, Old Republic Insurance Co., $40,633; workers’ compensation, Key Risk, $212,560; fiduciary liability, Chubb-Federal Insurance Co., $1,848; student accident, United States Fire Ins. Co., $56,280; voluntary school time (parent-paid), $28; and voluntary 24-hour with dental, $124;

• Carbon-Lehigh Intermediate Unit Non-Member School District and Charter Schools Special Education Services Agreement;

• Contract for one Approved Private School (APS) teacher to provide extended school year services for one NASD student attending the APS during summer 2016;

• Contract with Providastaff-EDU Healthcare for speech and language services at Col. John Siegfried Elementary School and/or other district buildings based on student needs at a cost not to exceed $68,000;

• Disposal of obsolete equipment and components by sale to Technology Exchange for $11,050; and

• Creation of Northampton Area High School student activity account for the Employment Prep Club.
