High school traffic changes in effect until Aug. 12
Major changes in traffic flow are in place this summer for the Northampton Area School District secondary campus, 1619 Laubach Ave.
The rerouting of traffic is necessary because of work on the bus loop, sidewalks and curbs at the Northampton Area Middle School’s west side lobby entrance and the recently completed auxiliary athletic field, site of the old middle school.
NASD Superintendent of Schools Joseph A. Kovalchik outlined the changes at the June 27 NASD board of education meeting.
“There’s a lot going on with that,” Kovalchik said. “The entire infrastructure is dug up.”
The summer traffic pattern went into effect June 13 and is expected to continue until Aug. 12.
Entrance from Kids Way to the campus street to the south of the high school and toward the middle school, known as Ed Pany Drive, is closed.
The street along the south of the high school connecting to the parking lot on the east side, or back, of the high school is also closed.
Konkrete Drive, to the north of the high school, is two way, with orange plastic barriers between lanes.
To enter the secondary campus, turn right or left off Laubach Avenue onto either Konkrete Lane or Kids Way.
To exit the secondary campus by Kids Way, turn right or left onto Laubach Avenue or use the turnaround area back onto Konkrete Lane.
Traffic traveling to the high school parking lot on the east side, or the back of the high school, is not permitted 7 a.m.-3:45 p.m. weekdays.
Traffic traveling to the high school back parking lot after 3:45 p.m. and on the weekends will enter and exit via Konkrete Lane.
School groups using the back fields, Al Erdosy Stadium, high school cafeteria and high school gym must park in the parking lot in front of the high school and enter and exit through the high school front doors. The building will close by 4:15 p.m.
The 2016-17 school year secondary campus traffic pattern will be announced this summer, according to the NASD website. The traffic pattern will change from the 2015-16 school year and the summer pattern because of the completion of the secondary campus project.
Other projects in the final phase of the $80.6 million Northampton Area Middle School and Secondary Campus Renovation Project expected to be completed this summer include ticket entrance to Erdosy Stadium, memorial paver bricks at the stadium entrance area, student memorial in the vicinity of the cafeteria entrance, high school marquee along Laubach Avenue, and the softball field and concession stand on the west side of Laubach Avenue.
“The bricks and pavers are being delivered [June 29],” NASD Director of Operations Robert J. Yanders said.
More than $20,000 has been raised by the pavers project.
School Director Robert Mentzell asked about the timetable for completion of the softball field.
“It’s going to be done by the time school starts,” Kovalchik said.
