Summer gathers STEAM for Title I summer camp July 18-28

Title I summer camp will be held July 18-28 at Col. John Siegfried Elementary School. Northampton Area School District Board of Education voted 8-0, with one director absent, to approve the program.

Cost for the eight-day summer STEAM camp is $20 per student. The fee is returned at the conclusion of the camp to each student who has no unexcused absences.

Also approved were program staff members, who will be paid with Title I funds at no cost to the district. Instructors include Melinda Jacobson, Katy Dremock, Dana Werkheiser and Hillary Hartzell.

STEAM education is defined as physical and social Sciences, Technology, principles of Engineering and design, language Arts and application of Mathematics.

Also approved:

• KTO summer school course, Keystone prep: English literature, and its instructors, Krista Ames and Lindsay Santanasto, NASD employees with secondary English certification. The program is fully funded through a KTO grant at no cost to the district;

• Teachers and 1:1 instructional assistants to provide extended school year and Chapter 15-Section 504 services for summer 2016; and

• Security guard employees to work at Northampton Area High School and Northampton Area Middle School during summer 2016 at their regular hourly rate of pay and, if necessary, substitutes at the approved substitute rate of pay.

Also approved by a series of 8-0 votes at the May 23 school board meeting:

• 2016-17 property tax reduction allocation of $1,466,866.15 to reduce property taxes and set the homestead-farmstead exclusion at the same fixed amount;

• NASD business office as 2016-17 district tax collector for Bath Borough, Chapman Borough, Allen Township, Moore Township, East Allen Township and Lehigh Township;

• 2016-17 supply and equipment bids for art, audio visual, cleaning, maintenance, general art, health, computer and general supplies to various vendors for a total of $176,536.70;

• Athletic ticket prices for the 2016-17 school year: student, $3; adult, $5; senior citizen (62-plus), free. Prices are unchanged;

• Contract for Terry Leh, NASD business administrator, annual salary of $130,463.15, beginning July 1 through June 30, 2021;

• Matthew Sawarynski, school board treasurer, July 1-June 30, 2017;

• Lacey Snyder, paid childbearing leave of absence, Sept. 6-Oct. 7, and unpaid childrearing leave with insurance, Oct. 10-28;

• Resignations of Robert Lawlor, student council adviser, effective at the end of the 2015-16 school year; Mariacruz Urtasun, Spanish club adviser, effective 2016-17 school year; Michele Paumen, marching band color guard instructor, effective April 14; and Angela Carlson, Lafarge team leader, effective end of the 2015-16 school year;

• Jolene Zito, unpaid leave of absence, May 11-31; and

• Voluntary transfer of Ronald Morey Jr., from middle shift custodian at Northampton Area Middle School to day shift custodian at Franklin Elementary, effective May 24, with no change in base salary.
