Law Enforcement Week was established May 15, 1962, when President John F. Kennedy, by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, proclaimed National Police Officers Memorial Day in recognition of fallen law enforcement officers who perished in the line of duty protecting others.
To prepare for National Law Enforcement Week, Alburtis Borough Mayor Kathleen Palmer spoke with Alburtis Elementary School Acting Principal Gloria Bowmen and arranged to have children at the school make signs to illustrate what police officers do for them.
Palmer displayed the signs in Alburtis Borough Hall and in the police station recently.
Palmer also presented certificates of appreciation to each Alburtis police officer from Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Browne, R-16th, in recognition of the faithful service by the officers to the community.
A commemorative plaque of the “Policeman’s Prayer” also was presented. The plaque is displayed in borough hall near the entrance door to the police department.
“I am very proud of our police department. They are very professional. They keep the residents safe and provide a valuable, service and we all sleep safe a night,” Borough Council President Ron DeIaco said following the presentation.
