Annual tour highlights eight gardens

Eight elaborate gardens were featured in the Allentown Garden Club “Garden Tour 2016” June 25.

The tour began at the Fragrance Garden, 3000 Parkway Blvd., Allentown, adjacent to the Rose Garden. The Fragrance Garden is maintained by Allentown Garden Club members and includes a variety of herbs, perennials and shrubs.

Seven other gardens, many within walking distance from one another, were part of the tour and included a variety of plantings, flowers, rock fountains, rare rhododendron species, vegetables, fountains, fish ponds, mature trees and shrubs and greenhouses.

The Allentown Garden Club was founded in 1948 and meets once a month. The club has approximately 100 members and 30 members were on the tour to answer questions from the many visitors.

The club is involved with a number of projects including an Arbor Day program, Certificate of Merit for neighborhood improvement, small business landscape design awards, junior gardening program and spring plant sale.

All proceeds from the annual tour benefit the Allentown Garden Club Scholarship Fund.
