Lehigh Valley’s Carpenter Cup softball team ended its run last Wednesday with a 2-1 loss in 10 innings against Tri-Cape after defeating Chester County 8-3 at FDR Park in Philadelphia.

“We were hitting right at people, or they made some good defensive plays,” said Lehigh Valley coach Blake Morgan. “It was just one of those days. We just didn’t get that break.”

Tri-Cape held a 1-0 lead for six innings when Emmaus’s Cassie Burke scored on an RBI single by Parkland’s Shauna Frank to tie the game in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the 10th Tri-Cape’s hit over the heads of Lehigh Valley players proved to be the game-winning run.

Lehigh Valley finished the double-elimination tournament, which also served as a showcase for college coaches, in fourth place with a record of 3-2.

Lehigh Valley’s victory over Chester County was more representative of the way Lehigh Valley hit throughout the tournament.

Parkland’s Chelsea Morgan, Whitehall’s Ashlee Brosky and Liberty’s Kristin Kaleycik all had doubles in that game, and Northampton’s Jillian Muthard hit a triple.

The Carpenter Cup Classic Softball Tournament began two days earlier when Lehigh Valley played three games.

In the first, Lehigh Valley defeated Delaware North 9-3.

Lehigh Valley took an early three-run lead on a triple by Parkland’s Shauna Frank. Later in the game, Liberty’s Kristin Kaleycik hit a two-run home run and a two-run double. Emmaus’s Cassie Burke and Madi Clark also had doubles against Delaware North.

Whitehall’s Kay Solderitch was Lehigh Valley’s winning pitcher.

In the second game, Lehigh Valley defeated Olympic Colonial 7-4.

Salisbury’s Lilia Crouthamel had an RBI double, and Burke and Clark had RBI singles. Solderitch added a home run, and Parkland’s Aubree Fritzinger was the winning pitcher.

The third game ended in Lehigh Valley’s first defeat of the tournament, losing to Philadelphia Catholic 7-6, after coming back from a 5-0 deficit.

A two-run single by Clark pulled Lehigh Valley to within one run, and triples by Fritzinger and Kaleycik put Lehigh Valley ahead 6-5 until the seventh inning.

Emmaus’s Brooke Iobst had a stolen base in the Philadelphia Catholic game.

“Anytime you lose, it hurts,” said coach Morgan. “But I’m proud of them. They made relationships that will last. They represented the community well, and they were blessings.”
