Retiring staff, students and board honored

Salisbury Township’s school board met June 15 to honor retiring staff members. The retirees had served the school district for a combined total of over 103 years.

The retirees included Donna Buzdygon, Salisbury High School’s Spanish teacher and Catherine Meholic, who taught math at SHS. Buzdygon was with the district 22 years and Meholic over 27.

Other retirees included Margaret Mann, who was a part-time instructional assistant at Salisbury Middle School for 19 years; Barbara Weiss, an instructional assistant at SMS for over 21 years; and Catherine A. Kiefer, who was a part-time cook at Harry S Truman elementary school since 2002. Each retiree was honored with a special plaque, permanent guest pass and a complimentary parting gift.

Also honored at the meeting were three recent Salisbury graduates who had achieved perfect scores on their SATs: Kevin Esslinger, Ryan Fainor and Matthew Fainor. Esslinger had achieved a perfect score on his math SAT in May 2015 and Ryan Fainor achieved perfect scores in math on the November and December 2014 and May 2015 SATs. Matthew Fainor achieved a perfect score on the reading portion of the December 2014 SATs. Essligner, Ryan Fainor and Matthew Fainor were also among the top 11 students of Salisbury’s Class of 2016 and Ryan was the Salutatorian.

Members of the high school yearbook staff presented the school board with a commemorative plaque and a complimentary yearbook honoring board members for their commitment and service to the school district.

After the awards were presented, the board commenced approval of several new employments to replace the retired members. Stani Schiavone, of Bangor, will assume Meholic’s position and Amanda Holschwander, of Macungie, will be employed as a full-time special education teacher.

In other personnel news, Wayne Covely was transferred to assistant to the director of facilities at the administration building. Brian Nesfeder was promoted to a district-wide utility maintenance worker to fill Covely’s spot at WSE. Doug Lapp has been transferred to a utility/maintenance/day custodian at HST. Scott Bonaskiewich was transferred to utility maintenance/day custodian at SHS, Brian Pritchard was transferred to a full-time utility maintenance/day custodian at WSE. Shannon Stokes was transferred from SHS to WSE as a guidance counselor. Joy Wernick was transferred to SHS from WSE as a guidance counselor.
