David Freeman appeared in Lehigh County Court 1:30 p.m. June 14 to hear his re-sentencing due to new Supreme Court rulings regarding juveniles serving life sentences.

Freeman, along with his brother Bryan and cousin Nelson “Ben” Birdwell III, murdered parents Brenda and Dennis Freeman, as well as their brother, Erik, Feb. 26, 1995. David and Bryan Freeman were 16 and 17, respectively, at the time of the murders.

Initially, the Freeman brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.

However, as a result of the Supreme Court’s recent decision that life sentences for those who committed crimes while under the age of 18 are a form of cruel and unusual punishment, the Freeman brothers must now be re-sentenced.

The Freemans, who were reportedly sympathetic to a neo-Nazi collective called the skinheads, committed the murders as tensions within the family came to a head. David pled guilty to murdering his father with a baseball bat in late 1995.

Bound in shackles and wearing a blue prisoner’s uniform, 36-year-old David Freeman appeared in court for approximately three minutes to hear his re-sentencing, which will take place 9:30 a.m. Oct. 4 in Lehigh County Court. Judge Maria L. Dantos will preside.

Bryan Freeman recently appeared in court for his re-sentencing, which will take place Sept. 22. Birdwell, who was 18 at the time of the murders, will not receive a re-sentence.

Freeman is currently incarcerated in the Lehigh County Jail.
