The Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup team went 1-1 in this year’s tournament. The team beat Mercer County (New Jersey) 12-9 in it a first-round game last Wednesday, but lost 6-4 to the Suburban One League American/Continental team in Friday’s second round, eliminated the Lehigh Valley from the single-elimination tournament.
In the win over Mercer Country, the Lehigh Valley took a lead when Northwetsern’s Tyler Schreiner sacrificed t o score Brett Foulke (Notre Dame GP) in the second innnig before CJ Gantz (Nothampton) scored on a Trey Durrah (Easton) walk for a 2-0 lead.
After Mercer took a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning, the LV team started chipping away at the lead.
Schreiner tripled and scored on a Chris Burke (North Schuylkill) single in the fourth inning. Mercer made it 6-3 in the third inning, but the LV responded with run in four of the next six innings.
Emmaus’ Eric Cichocki scored on a Tyler Bruno (Parkland) double to right field to start a three-run fifth inning. Bruno scored on a double play and Ivan Solis (Allen) scored on a CJ Peechatka (Pocono Mountain East) single to tie the game at 6-6.
Mercer County went back ahead with two runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to go up 9-6, but the LV pitchers held Mercer scoreless for the last three innings.
The Lehigh Valley tied the game in the eighth inning when Evan Marushak (Emmaus) scored on Cichocki’s triple. Cickocki came in on a Bruno fielder’s choice and Sammy Kraihanzel (Liberty) homered to make it 9-9.
Matt Mellinger (Parkland) scored the game-winning run on a fielder’s choice in the ninth inning. Peechatka scored on a Marushak single and came in a line-out by Bruno for the 12-9 final score.
Tyler Schreiner went 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run scored, while his brother Trevor (Northwestern) went 1-for-3. Burke was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Cichocki was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Kraihanzel went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Marushak was 1-for-1 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Bruno went 1-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs.Gantz was 2-for-2.
Parkland’s Michael Jenkins pitched the first two innings against Mercer County before allowing five runs in the third and giving way to Emmaus’ Matt Lanzone, who picked one and a third innings and gave up a run on two hits. Emmaus Todd Moxey pitched one full inning and allowed two runs on three walks and no hits. Parkland’s Braeden Duff took over and went two and two thirds innings. He allowed a run on three hits while striking out three. Allen’s Erick Reyes finished off the win with a scoreless inning and two thirds.
In Friday’s loss to SOL American/Continental, the LV committed four errors after an error-free performance in the first round.
Lehigh Valley pitchers Luke Steven, Matt Morrow (Bethlehem Catholic), Jenkins, Duff and Reyed allowed eight hits and were charged with five of the six runs that were scored.
LV’s Cichocki (2-for-3, run scored) and Bruno (2-for-3, run, RBI) were the only players on their team with multiple hits. Burke, Mellinger, Kraihanzel, Jared Burcin (Liberty) and Emmett McCauley had one hit each.
