A young black bear decided Tuesday to take a tour of various neighborhoods in South Whitehall.

South Whitehall Township police were called out around 7 a.m. June 14 for reports of a bear in the area of North 18th and Frankenfield streets.

The bear was eventually located in the drainage area in the northwest corner of Route 22 and Mauch Chunk Road, police say.

Officers isolated the bear in a small wooded area until members of Pennsylvania Game Commission arrived.

With the help of police, the game commission safely tranquilized the bear, which was estimated to be 2 to 2-1/2 years old and weigh around 239 pounds.

Removed from the area, the game commission will release the wandering Ursus americanus to a safer area.
