LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Washington applies for disaster relief

The winter’s heavy snowstorm caused extra expense to Washington Township.

On June 7, supervisors passed a resolution to apply for the disaster relief available from the state.

Zoning Officer Todd Weidman prepared the paperwork.

The Slatington Halloween parade is scheduled for Oct. 22 with a rain date of Oct. 23.

Fire police from Washington have been asked to help. The parade will organize on Grove Street. That street will be closed at 6 p.m.

Rezoning was requested for 3312 Church Street to permit its use as a retail store.

The lot had received a variance in 2004 but now a zoning change is preferred rather than amending the variance.

Secretary JoAnn Ahner said the township received a $34,668 recycling grant to be used for a chipper.

Sharon Drive and Sharon Court have been added to the road project which includes Welshtown and Smith Hill roads.

Old Mill Road was to be done but it will wait until truck traffic from the Pennsylvania Turnpike project will no longer be using the road.

Justin Ross asked if there will be new paving or an overlay on Sharon Drive.

He said the last time it was done tar softened during the 90 and 100 degree days and ran down peoples’ driveways with it even going into a garage.

“Between the pitch and rocks my sneakers were ruined,” he said.

He was told the roadmaster will be on site to make sure it is done correctly this time.

David Altrichter, chairman of the Slatington Veterans Memorial committee, told supervisors work on the project started in June by going to the borough council for permission.

The memorial is to honor the 29 people from Northern Lehigh who died in Vietnam and then everyone else who died during service.

The major fundraiser will be bricks with room for three lines of type and up to 15 characters per line.

The emblems of the five military units will be displayed along with fencing, a flagpole, lighting, park benches and the monument.

Groundbreaking is planned for July 4 and the memorial is expected to be finished by Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Bricks and pavers are being donated.

The memorial will be located at Slatington Memorial Park, Second and Main streets.

Newside Estates, approved as a subdivision in 2006 with 13 lots, was bought by a new developer.

Some roads and road beds were dedicated. Rain gardens were included in the plans to help with drainage.

Improved roads have to go past a home before an occupancy permit will be issued.

The township has to request the renewal of a PennDOT permit connecting Newside Road to a state road.

Solicitor John Ashley will work with the developer to move the plan forward.

Friedens Fire Chief Joel Merkel said the next date to install smoke detectors will be June 25. He said cars are being abandoned and set on fire.

John Hodos said there is a water problem at Ventura Street.

The water collects at the point of properties. Leaves fill it in and eventually build a dam. The township has cleaned it twice and it is needed again.

There is also a dog problem in the area. People are not cutting their grass, he said, indicating on his upper leg how high it is.

Ed Ziegler asked why the treasurer’s report is from April instead of May. He said if the meeting date was moved back to the second Tuesday there would be time for the report to be prepared before the meeting instead of a month later.

Bikes and motorcycles encounter a lot of rocks on the curve under the turnpike. Supervisor Josh Friebolin said he would talk to Trumbull, the contractor forPa. Turnpike work.
