In remembrance of those who died while serving our country, Alburtis Elementary School held a Memorial Day service at the school’s flagpole recently.
A number of prominent local figures, including several Alburtis firefighters, Police Chief Robert Palmer, Mayor Kathleen Palmer and Councilperson Kathleen Raines attended.
Fifth grader Olivia Vinsky served as master of ceremonies. Following the raising of the flag by Boy Scouts Jarren Smith, Matoskah Ritter and custodian Mike Mondovich, Kyra Soto led her fifth grade classmates in a rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner.”
First grade students then recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
The service included patriotic poems and songs such as “Yankee Doodle Dandy” performed by the students. A red, white and blue floral wreath was placed under the flag by Smith and Ritter.
The closing song taps, performed by fifth grader Thomas Flexer and fourth grader Mason Allen, was prefaced by a reading of its history.
