According to Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim, one Northampton man killed another then turn the gun on himself just before 11 p.m. May 25 in a home the 6700 block of Route 873, Washington Township.
Grim said Joseph S. Sommer, 48, of 642 E. 10th St., and Harry R. Bortz, 34, of 17 W. 10th St., both of Northampton, died in a murder-suicide.
Sommer was pronounced dead at 11:54 p.m. and Bortz was pronounced dead at 11:55 p.m. that day by Lehigh County Deputy Coroner Craig Hanzl at the home.
Both Sommer and Bortz’s cause of death is attributed to a gunshot wound, Grim said.
Grim said Sommer’s death was ruled a homicide. Bortz’s death was ruled a suicide.
State Police Troop M Bethlehem, Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office and the Homicide Task Force assisted at the scene.
Sommer was a 1985 graduate of Northampton High School.
He was the head coach of Northampton’s youth wrestling program and vice president of the wrestling booster club.
