Bauer earns two more state medals
Emotions poured out of Lindsay Bauer after her final track meet of her high school career.
Her last goal of the 2016 season was to capture gold at the PIAA Track and Field Championships in one, if not both, of her jumping events. Those were the objectives Bauer set for herself after another dominant showing at leagues and districts.
And while she came up short on her ultimate goal of gold, it’s hard to be disappointed with adding two more state medals to her collection that has now reached six. Bauer, who placed fourth in the long jump on Friday, capped her career with a second-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 37 feet, 5 inches on Saturday at Shippensburg University.
“I know I have bigger and better things ahead,” Bauer said. “But since the beginning of the season, I wanted to win a state gold. That was my goal for awhile now, but to fall one step short is pretty hard.”
What made it even tougher for Bauer was the fact that she was jumping the best ever has in the weeks leading up to states.
At the Colonial League Meet, Bauer broke both the long jump and high jump records. And a week later she shattered the district triple jump record and set a new personal best of 38 feet, 8 inches.
“It’s pretty frustrating because I know I’m better than what I did today,” Bauer said. “I was the number one seed. I didn’t feel any pressure with that. I knew I could have won it.”
Bauer expected the triple jump to be a two-athlete competition between her and Fort Cherry senior Kory Jozwiakowski. She was right. Despite entering with a top seed mark of 38-8, Jozwiakowski edged out Bauer by four inches for gold.
“I fouled three times today, and that was really hard,” Bauer said. “I got one good jump in the prelims. That was 36 [feet]. My first one was huge and it felt good. After that I guess I couldn’t get it back together.
“I knew it was going to be between me and her. Only one of us could win. She did better today.”
It will take time, but once Bauer looks back at a high school career that is filled with an abundance of medals and records, it’s one she couldn’t have asked more of. It’s definitely one people won’t forget any time soon.
“I just want them to remember how hard I worked for everything,” Bauer said. “There wasn’t a day I didn’t work hard for what I’ve earned. I’m really proud to represent my school, to have my name in that gym on all of those banners. That’s going to be there forever.”
