Over 760 students received degrees at York College of Pennsylvania’s commencement exercises May 14.

Zachary Merkle, of Coplay, has been named to the spring 2016 dean’s list at Mansfield University. To be named to the dean’s list, a student must attend the university full time and attain at least a 3.5 quality-point average for the semester.

Megan L. Berner, of Whitehall, joined 368 graduating seniors, 70 master’s degree candidates and 37 doctor of physical therapy candidates in the May 14 commencement in the Sorrentino gymnasium. Berner, a graduate of Whitehall High School, received a bachelor of science in actuarial science.

Lebanon Valley College (LVC), Annville, welcomes 1,573 full-time undergraduates studying more than 30 challenging and sophisticated majors as well as customized self-designed majors. Matthew Bonshak, of Whitehall, was among the students who received the Contribution to Student Life Award for the 2016 spring semester at the Student Life Leadership Awards Ceremony, held in May at Lehigh University. This award recognizes students who have significantly contributed to improving of the quality of student life during their time at Lehigh. Criteria includes good academic standing and specific contributions to student life through involvement in campus activities, academic initiatives, student governance, community service, leadership and their pursuits to support and empower their peers.

Jason George Dearing, of Whitehall, was one of four undergraduates honored during Alfred University’s commencement May 14 for high academic achievement. Top honor students are seated on stage throughout the ceremony. The highest ranked graduating student in each undergraduate college or school is selected by the registrar based on a minimum of 60 GPA hours. Dearing also was congratulated for his accomplishment by Angie To, associate professor in the Foundations Program, School of Art and Design. Dearing is a son of Glenn and Laura Dearing and a graduate of Union Endicott High School.

Founded in 1836, Alfred University became the first coeducational institution in New York State and the second in the nation. Some 1,800 full-time undergraduate and nearly 300 graduate students from 31 states and 20 countries attend full time on the Alfred campus. Four-hundred graduate students work and live in 52 buildings on a scenic 232-acre hillside campus adjoining the village of Alfred. The university is comprised of the privately-endowed College of Professional Studies, housing the School of Business, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as well as the state-sponsored College of Ceramics housing the Kazuo Inamori School of Engineering and the School of Art and Design. Academic award recipients, scholarship winners and university scholars were recognized for their achievements at the event. Michael Krajsa, instructor in business at Penn State Lehigh Valley and recipient of the 2015 Teaching Excellence Award, was the keynote speaker.
