Bauer wins two gold medals
When asked how many district medals she now owns after adding two more from last week’s District 11 Track and Field Championships, Salisbury senior Lindsay Bauer couldn’t rattle off the exact number.
Just hours after earning the second of two gold medals at her final district meet, her focus shifted toward a medal she’s still chasing-a state gold. Bauer will have her opportunity to capture that this week at Shippensburg University.
Bauer picked up gold in the long jump last Wednesday, Day 1 of competition, at Whitehall High School’s Zephyrs Sports Complex. On Day 2, she earned gold in the triple jump with a mark of 38 feet, 8 inches, setting a new District 11 Class 2A record.
“In the back of my mind I was kind of chasing for it, but I just wanted to have a good jump,” said Bauer, whose previous personal best was 38-2 set at the Allentown School District Invitational. “My second jump was a 38-4 1/4; that broke my PR and the record right there. My third one was 38-8, and I was just through the roof. I couldn’t believe it.”
In the high jump, Bauer jumped 17-10 ½ to win the event at districts for the third consecutive year. She also won the triple jump three straight times, breaking a district record set by Saucon Valley’s Michana Johnson in 1989.
After breaking so many records (she shattered a 40-year old Colonial League Meet record last week) Bauer heads into her final high school meet with confidence.
“With leagues and districts and everything, I think I’m in really good shape with states right around the corner,” Bauer said. “I have a lot of confidence in this event now. I didn’t used to, but I think I’m more confident in triple than long. I’m really looking forward to this going into states.”
A number of other Falcons were extremely close to qualifying for states.
Jack Reichenbach placed second in the high jump, but came up two inches shy of the state-qualifying height of 6-4. He finished second at 6-2, but in boys Class AA only event winners earn an automatic berth to states.
“The goal was always to get into states at 6-4, but I always want to break my PR of 6-6, so I was hoping to get 6-7,” Reichenbach said. “In long jump I took all six jumps, and I didn’t do as well as I wanted.”
Reichenbach placed sixth in the long jump at 20 feet, 9 ½ inches.
Rylee Donaldson was just one place off of joining Bauer at states. In girls Class AA, the top two finishers in each event earn a trip to states. The freshman came in third in the 400-meter dash in 1:00.96, .63 seconds off Palisades’ Lydia Bottelier for second place.
“Midway through the season I was running a consistent 1:04 or 1:05, and then one meet I dropped to a 1:01,” Donaldson said. “I was looking at those top times, and I thought to myself that I could get there. I kind of had higher expectations going into leagues and districts than the whole season.”
Salisbury’s Eric Frankenfield took third place in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.50 second. Robert Kulp placed fourth in high jump at 5-10 and Ian Carson finished sixth in high jump at 5-8.
Unlike last year when multiple boys and girls made the trip to Shippensburg, Bauer will be the lone Falcon in her fourth and final trip to states. But she’s more focused than ever on grabbing that elusive gold.
She expects it to come down to her and Fort Cherry senior Koryn Jozwiakowski, although plenty of others are right on their heels. They’re the only two Class 2A females that have cleared 38 feet. Bauer jumped 36-5 1/2 in 2015; Jozwiakowski’s mark was 37-9.
“From the very beginning of the season, that’s been my goal: to win long or triple or both because right now I’m ranked top three in both events,” Bauer said. “I told my parents this, and my friends and everything, that the only thing I really don’t have is a state gold. That would be the fairytale ending to my career in high school.”
Bauer will jump in the long jump on Friday at 12:30. She’ll jump at the same time on Saturday in the triple jump.
