Seniors earn fourth straight league title
Once the year is over, six seniors will have left their mark and gone down in Parkland girls lacrosse program history.
Sage Barnett, Alex Borelli, Ana Emrick, Cat Gaffney, Lexi Rice and Sarah Stagaard have all been at least two-year starters, and have been varsity members for multiple years. And they are winners.
With a victory last Monday evening, the Trojans (15-5 overall) captured their fourth straight league championship with an 18-10 victory over Easton in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference final.
They also did it on the new multi-sport turf complex, opened up on campus less than two months ago, becoming the first Parkland sports team to win a championship on it.
“The thing I said to them was, ‘Let’s make history and let’s be the first team to win a championship on this field,’” Trojans coach Dawn Cipolla said. “Having six seniors, I think that helped getting everyone moving. I think that they’re extremely happy with how they played and that they can leave their Parkland career being a four-time league champion.”
Stagaard (8 goals), Emrick (3 goals), Gaffney (2 goals), and Rice (1 goal) all contributed goals for the Trojans. Barnett and Borelli held the Red Rovers offense in check for a majority of the night, and had a big part in controlling the faceoff wins.
“It’s awesome,” Stagaard said. “We’ve been together for a long time. So, it’s just really nice to win as a team and as a family.”
The Parkland girls lacrosse program was a dominant force in the Lehigh Valley Conference and now continues that tradition in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. But the Trojans, in particular these six seniors, want another championship.
“To win four years in a row just shows how strong our program is here,” said Rice. “We’ve all grown up together and it has been so much fun. But we don’t want it to stop here. We want to win districts and keep playing together.”
These seniors will begin that journey in the District 11 tournament Monday.
Barnett, Borelli, Emrick, Gaffney, and Stagaard were all named to the EPC First-Team.
