Reichenbach medals twice

Jack Reichenbach got his first taste of the postseason track and field atmosphere last year as a freshman at Notre Dame (Green Pond). But that trip came and went without Reichenbach gaining a medal to show for his accomplishments.

This year, however, he walked away from Whitehall High School with some hardware.

Reichenbach earned two medals during Tuesday and Wednesday’s Colonial League Track and Field Championships at Zephyrs Sports Complex. Both of those medals-a silver in the long jump and bronze in the high jump-came on Day 2 of competition.

“Last year I went home empty-handed,” Reichenbach said. “I didn’t jump as well as I wanted to. But it was nice to be recognized this year because last year wasn’t as good.”

While Reichenbach might not have jumped up to his expectations, he nearly won the long jump event. It took one last jump from Pen Argyl’s Logan Sterner to find the height he was anticipating, out-leaping Reichenbach for good.

“I ended up losing by a quarter of an inch on the last jump of the day,” said Reichenbach, who jumped 21-4 1/2. “I was winning by about nine inches the entire day. On the kid’s last jump he beat me. But then I had one more jump and it would have been huge, but I ended up putting my foot down in the air.”

Just hours later, Reichenbach finished third in the high jump with a height of six feet, two inches. Everyone at Whitehall knew that Notre Dame’s Greg Lauray was in control as he broke a 16-year record and jumped a stunning seven feet, one inch. Reichenbach, who considers the high jump his main event, was focused on surpassing Palmerton’s Spencer Hay for second.

“It’s always nice to place,” Reichenbach said. “But Spencer Hay and I, we always go at it, and he got the best today. I’ll see him again next week. I would have liked to get second.

“I took all six of my long jumps, and I kind of gave all of my energy to long jump. I didn’t have the pop that I usually do for high jump.”

Reichenbach also competed in the triple jump and placed eighth with a mark of 40 feet, six inches last Tuesday.

On the season, Reichenbach’s personal best in the high jump is 6-6 in which he set at the Allentown School District Invitational in April. He wants to one-up himself at the district meet this week in both the high jump and long jump.

“I’m seeded first by about five inches, but I hope to break 22 feet for districts, which would get me into states easily,” Reichenbach said of the long jump.

“At our last home meet, I was going for 6-7, and on the first attempt I ended up knocking it off with only my ankle...That’s my goal for the year.”

Senior Tevon Weber was the lone Salisbury male to earn gold at the Colonial League Meet with a throw of 179 feet, seven inches in the javelin. The next closest thrower was Tanner Barr of Pen Argyl with a mark of 149 feet, two inches.

A number of other Falcons narrowly missed out on earning medals, including Eric Frankenfield, who placed in the top nine in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and javelin event. Weber also placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 117 feet, five inches. Robert Kulp (high jump) and Tyler Keller (pole vault) placed in the top 10 of their respective events.
