NWL retiring teachers honored for combined 67 years of service

Teachers retiring received certificates and the thanks of the board in presentations at the May 11 Northwestern Lehigh School Board meeting.

Principal Jill Berlet of Weisenberg Elementary said Alisa Maher worked each day for the safety of students as they enter school. She fostered a positive attitude giving students a great feeling.

Johanna Reisteter was at Weisenberg for 19 years. She went above and beyond to help each student do their best.

She plays with the Allenton Band and Berlet said she can enjoy her playing more with the free time.

Sharon Mangold received her certificate from Maria Pullo, Northwestern Elementary principal. She had 20 years of service in the office and was always willing to help.

Middle School Principal William Davico said Rebecca Karoly had 18 years as an instruction assistant. She worked to ensure the success of each and every student because she saw the potential in all.

“You’ve all made such an impression on the district,” said Superintendent Mary Anne Wright.

In other matters, a majority of the support staff will receive a 3-percent pay increase.

The proposed final budget was approved with expenditures of $41,984,251. Tax levies are: real estate tax, 15,9631 mills (no increase); earned income tax, 0.5 percent; real estate transfer tax, 0.5 for each of four townships and a local service tax of $10.

Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Holman and Andrea Edmonds are responsible for placing children in special education classes.

Approval was given for an agreement with the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit to share in the Technology in Education Legal Counsel Consortium.

Student activity fund projects are Kauffman’s barbecue chicken for a science team fundraiser, Dan’s Camera City for the Class of 2016 prom on May 29 and Northampton Memorial Co. for a middle school flagpole stone to honor veterans.

The Facilities Master Plan moved to the board a request for approval of $3.4 million budgeted for maintenance items for the next five years. The list will be reviewed every October.

Also at the meeting, the board heard enrollment is down by one student.

Board member Phil Toll was named board treasurer and there were 38 volunteers from Northwestern Lehigh at the Special Olympics in Whitehall.

Each school will have two doses of naloxone with a person trained to administer it if needed. The drug can be lifesaving for heroin overdoses.

Electrician David Wright was thanked by the board for working on the scoreboard on his own time.
