Memorial Day program to honor veterans May 30
The Lower Macungie Historical Society and the Lower Macungie Garden Club will hold a short service to honor veterans 9 a.m. May 30 at the memorial in Wescosville Park on Hamilton Boulevard.
The Lower Macungie Pool will open for the season May 28. On May 28 to 30 and June 4 and 5, the pool will be open noon to 8 p.m. Starting June 11, the pool will be open daily noon to 8 p.m. The pool will close 4:45 p.m. June 16, 20 and 27 and July 18 for swim meets. Registration for Lower Macungie Township Pool swim lessons can be made by contacting the Lower Macungie Township Community Center 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There will not be a designated night for signups.
The Lower Macungie Historical Society will hold spring planting June 5 at the log house on Hamilton Boulevard. There will also be tours of the house, children’s games and strawberries and ice cream.
Macungie Band will perform 7 p.m. June 11 at the Hills at Lockridge. The Outlaws featuring Crazy Elmer will perform 7 p.m. June 25 at East Texas Park. Pioneer Band will perform 7 p.m. July 9 at East Texas Park.
The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon June 6 and 20 at the Lower Macungie Township Community Center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.
The community center offers a number of activities. CPR classes will be offered May 24 and 26. A safe sitter program will be offered June 29.
Miller-Keystone Blood Center and Lower Macungie Township will hold a blood drive 4 to 7 p.m. June 28.
Family open gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.
The Lower Macungie Library will be closed May 30 in observance of Memorial Day and June 3 for staff development.
Throughout the month of May, Lower Macungie Library will feature the paintings of Howard Ellsworth.
The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. June 1 to discuss “The Japanese Lover” by Isabel Allende. The book for July 6 is “Alice” by Stacy Cordery.
The library presents the “Great Decisions” program by the Foreign Policy Association 6 p.m. Wednesday evenings. Programs include the United Nations, Migration, Kurdistan and the Koreas. Participants who sign up for four or more sessions will receive a Great Decisions Booklet.
The library is hosting a trip to Hyde Park, the homes of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, June 11. The tour includes the Presidential Library and a tea at the Val-Kill Tea Room at Joseph’s Steakhouse. Reservation deadline is June 1.
Registration for the 2016 Summer Reading Program “On Your Mark, Get Set…Read!” for children from birth through 6th grade begins June 4. There will also be programs for students in grades one and two and grades three to five Tuesdays throughout the summer. Registration can be completed online or at the library. Students entering grades six through 12 can register for “Get in the Game.” There is also a summer reading club for adults. The theme is “Exercise Your Mind. Read!”
Children’s librarian Miss Lisa will be moving to the Lower Macungie Pool 2:30 to 4 p.m. June 15 for story time and a craft station. Pool admission is required for the event.
Family Fun Nights are back. The kickoff for 2016 will be the Marvels of Motion presented by Mad Science 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 20. The program is geared to children ages five through 12. Advanced registration is required.
The library is hosting a series of programs following the theme Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, a project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. An Allentown walking tour 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 21 will be offered starting at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum and including the Allentown Art Museum.

The Friends of the Library wish to extend a huge thank you to all who donated or shopped at the spring book sale. The library will accept book donations for the fall book sale starting June 1.
The Friends of the Library will meet 10 a.m. May 21 in the library. This will be the last meeting until September.
Yard waste site hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Be prepared to show your photo I.D. as proof of residency.
