Editor’s view: What’s with the wacky weather?
I awoke Monday morning, May 16, to local weather reports stating there was a frost advisory for the Lehigh Valley and Berks County areas until 8 a.m.
The high temperature for 5 p.m. that evening was forecast to be 65 degrees.
Clouds and showers were predicted for Tuesday and Wednesday.
One local meteorologist said it was snowing in New York state, and there was even a video of snow flurries in the Poconos.
A double rainbow is said to have made an appearance over certain areas of the Valley.
Throughout the weekend, the televised weather-wonders told of snow falling in Altoona and the western part of Pennsylvania.
On Sunday, as I waited to take photos at a vegetable garden dedication at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Krumsville, Berks County, pellets of hail coated the windshield of my car. The hail was soon followed by pouring rain.
During the dedication, as the pastor was speaking, the skies briefly opened and rays of bright sun peaked through.
Was somebody on high watching the ceremony in the field behind the church?
By the time I drove home, gusty winds had blown my lawn furniture helter-skelter to various locations in my yard.
The only thing keeping the furniture on my property instead of blowing over into my neighbors’ yards was the tall grass, which I have not been able to mow because of all the rain!
After uprighting and returning the lounge chairs and cushions to their proper locations, it was time to let the dogs out.
My dogs, a chihuahua and a beagle, peeked out the back door and refused to budge.
Now, I can understand the chihuahua not wanting to go outside in the heavy winds but the 60-pound beagle? No more watching “The Wizard of Oz” and Toto for either of them!
The potted geraniums have been moved inside and out so often they are beginning to grow legs.
I cannot wait to see what wacky weather happens next.
The old saw “April showers bring May flowers” needs to be revised to “May mayhem brings June jitters.”
With the first day of summer a month away, on June 20, there is still plenty of time for the Lehigh Valley to be “blessed” with fish falling from the sky, locusts invading whatever is left of the crops and a return to the deep freeze of the Ice Age.
So much for the theory of global warming...
