Superintendent assures parents, teachers - no threat to school
On May 2, Emmaus High School experienced its second lockdown of the year, as a result of two 22-caliber bullets found in a bathroom, according to Superintendent Dr. Michael Schilder.
The lockdown, deemed an exterior threat, went into effect at the beginning of first period, around 7:30 a.m. The students stayed in their first period classes until around 10:30 a.m. For the rest of the day, EHS operated under an exterior threat lockdown. Students were able to walk the halls and classes resumed.
The administration worked with police to identify the individual responsible for dropping the bullets. According to Schilder’s press release, the student intended to cause an early dismissal.
Several rumors circulated throughout the week about the lockdown in relation to certain posts on social media, but the administration assured the EHS community there were no threats to the school.
On May 17, a Lehigh Carbon Community College admissions representative will visit EHS during periods five, seven and eight. The representative will meet with seniors who have already applied to LCCC and plan to attend in the fall. Each meeting will last around 15 minutes and is intended to help students complete the admissions process. Students are encouraged to stop by the counseling office to sign up for a meeting.
The Keystone exams at EHS will be administered on the following schedule: May 16 – Biology Keystone Exam Module 1; May 17 – Biology Keystone Exam Module 2; May 19 – Algebra 1 Keystone Exam Module 1; May 20 – Algebra 1 Keystone Exam Module 2; May 23 – Literature Keystone Exam Module 1 and May 24 – Literature Keystone Exam Module 2.
All students who are testing should report to school at normal time.
All students who are not testing should report to school on a two and a half hour delay. Transportation will be provided for bus students.
Seniors in National Honor Society who wish to purchase honor stoles for graduation are to have the form and money to Mrs. Arnold by May 11.
The 2016 Senior Ball will be held 6 to 10 p.m. May 28 at the Palace Center in Allentown. Doors open 5:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale through May 11 during all lunch periods.
Applications for class officers for next school year will be accepted through May 12. Applications can be picked up in the activities office or in the following class advisor locations: Class of 2017 - Mrs. Ardito (Room 235) and Mrs. Murray (Room 335); Class of 2018 - Mrs. Simpkins (Room 557) and Mrs. Frantzen (Room 569) and Class of 2019 - Mr. Gavin (Room 578) and Mr. Grabfelder (Room 560).
The senior picnic will be held May 27 at Emmaus Community Park. Students will be dismissed at the end of third period.
As summer approaches, students are reminded of fall sports sign-ups. Sign-ups for girls tennis will be May 19 after school in Café 1. Boys and girls soccer sign-ups will be held 3 p.m. May 19 in Café 1.
