Steckel is named high school principal
The Northampton Area High School acting principal has been named principal.
Robert Steckel was approved unanimously 9-0 by Northampton Area School District Board of Education at the April 25 meeting. Steckel’s annual salary is $108,000, pro-rated, plus benefits. The appointment was effective April 26.
“I appreciate your vote of confidence,” Steckel told the board and fellow administration officials after the vote. “Northampton is a great place, and I appreciate this opportunity.”
The board appointed Steckel NAHS acting principal Jan. 11, with his appointment effective Jan. 25. Steckel, a nine-year district employee, is a former district teacher and coach of the NAHS Konkrete Kids varsity football team.
Steckel succeeds Steven Seier, who was appointed Jan. 31, 2013, by the school board. Seier resigned after being hired as principal of New Hope-Solebury High School, Bucks County.
In other business at the April 25 meeting, school directors voted 9-0 to approve:
• The resignation of Rachel Knepp, yearbook adviser, effective at the end of the 2015-16 school year;
• Mr. and Mrs. Lafayette Harvey, with child Aminah, and Mr. and Mrs. Michael Geist, with children Joseph, Zachary and Isabella, to attend the Pennsylvania Department of Education Title I State Parent Conference, Seven Springs, July 18-20, at a cost not to exceed $2,155. The cost is covered through the Title I parent involvement funds budgeted for this purpose. There is no cost to NASD for the conference;
• Adoption of the 2016-17 Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 general operating budget of $3,317,180 with the NASD portion of $40,098.87; and
• Lunch prices for the 2016-17 school year:
Elementary student, $2.05
Secondary student, $2.25
Student entrée only, elementary student, $1.85
Student entrée only, secondary student, $2
Student milk (one-half pint), elementary and secondary student, 50 cents
Adult, $3.75
Adult entrée only, $2-$3.
At the April 11 meeting, school directors voted 8-0 to approve:
• The resignations of Susan Marshall, reading specialist, for retirement, effective June 9 or the last teacher day of the 2015-16 school year; Melissa Werkheiser, short-term substitute special education teacher, effective March 23; Dorothy Kaas, English as a Second Language teacher, for retirement, effective June 9, or the last teacher day of the 2015-16 school year; Lindsey Santanasto, yearbook editorial and business adviser, effective at the end of the 2015-16 school year;
• The hiring of Karissa Hantz, short-term substitute special education teacher, Franklin Elementary School, effective retroactive to March 29 through the remainder of the 2015-16 school year, at the daily rate of $125, with no benefits;
• Dr. Kathleen E. Ott, Mrs. Krista Ames, Mrs. Alyza Commareri and Mrs. Paula Ulrich to attend the Pennsylvania Literacy Conference, Hershey, June 21-23, at a cost to the district to not exceed $354.24;
• Camp Invention and invention project summer enrichment programs, June 27-30, at Siegfried Elementary School and Northampton Area Middle School. The cost for the four-day summer STEM activities programs is $140 for grades 3-5 and $175 for grades 6-8. The reduced prices are possible through a contribution from Northampton Konkrete Kids Educational Foundation. Also approved was the list of staff members who will be paid directly by Camp Invention. There is no cost to NASD for the program;
• Bids for paper and janitorial supplies to cost $113,023.61 and awarded by Northampton/Monroe-Pike County Joint Purchasing Board;
• Renewal agreement to the contract with Aramark Educational Services LLC for food service management for the 2016-17 school year;
• Robert J. Yanders as the designated agent of NASD to execute the required documents for reimbursement under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act. The district seeks $30,000 spent in the Jan. 22-23 snowstorm;
• Dr. Michael Baird to serve as the NASD representative to Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 Board of Directors for a three-year term, beginning July 1 through June 30, 2019; and
• Use of the Amazon Trade-In Program to provide Amazon credit for use by the special education department to purchase items for students with disabilities.
