Picnic tables requested for Slatedale playground

Michelle Schramel and Lisa Neff attended the May 3 meeting of the Washington Township supervisors.

Schramel asked if there were picnic tables that could be placed at the Slatedale playground pavilion. They would be used by Scouts and during championship games.

Presently there are three tables but five are needed.

Supervisor Josh Friebolin said he would look into it.

Schramel said kids come in after the playground is closed and cause damage.

Main Road will be closed from June 13 to Aug. 21 due to work on the turnpike. Franklin and Center streets may be closed at times.

Trumbull Corp., the company rebuilding the Pennsylvania Turnpike bridge near Emerald, gave notice of the closures to the supervisors.

There were two exemptions from the township real estate tax for disabled veterans at the request of the Veterans Affairs office.

Bids were opened for the Old Mill Road bridge. They were for $182,368 and $168,040. The low bid from Professional Construction Contractors of Bethlehem was accepted, pending review by the engineer.

Fire Chief Joel Merkel of the Friedens Fire Company recently found that some land believed to belong to the township actually belongs to the fire company. It includes the land used as a playground. The Playground Association will be contacted.

Insurance will be expected to change since the fire company will have the liability of the playground equipment. Merkel asked if they could get free legal advice from Solicitor John Ashley.

Merkel said his father always told him the property was part of the township.

The Red Cross with fire company help installed 223 smoke detectors and found many that were so old they had to be replaced. The group will be out again in June.

It is expected it will take two years to cover the entire township.

In public comment Ed Ziegler asked if the repaired Old Mill bridge will be able to carry an 80,000 pound load. It is expected to be able to handle that amount.

Cleanup day for Washington Township residents only will be 8 a.m. to noon June 4.
