Julie McDonnell awarded for 22 years of service
During the May 5 Lower Macungie Board of Commissioners meeting, Julie McDonnell was presented with a plaque from the commissioners for 22 years of service with the parks and recreation board. The commissioners expressed their gratitude for her outstanding years of service.
In other news, Scott Alderfer sent a letter regarding Mill Creek Road with recommendations from the public safety commission. A suggestion was to have the electronic speed signs returned with continued usage through October 2017. The commission also suggested to paint “slow” on the road and to use Pennsylvania Department of Transporation approved diamond signs attached to the speed limit signs.
A resident requested a sign be placed at the beginning of Magnolia Circle stating, “Not a Thru Street.” Commissioners were told drivers turn in to this street not realizing it is a dead end.
The BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse will be coming to the Crossings, the new shopping center in Lower Macungie Township. The restaurant must obtain a liquor license and is not able to do so through Lower Macungie Township. It was suggested the license be secured in Upper Macungie Township then transferred to Lower Macungie Township. This will require a hearing which will be scheduled when the license obtained.
Jennifer Tyma, a member of the library board, has submitted a letter of resignation due to relocation of her residence. This was approved with regret. McDonnell said Tyma brought a lot of good ideas to the board and will be missed.
The Riverbend Road construction project has a company to reconstruct a portion of the road. Semmel Excavating submitted the lowest bid and therefore, is awarded the project. The area to be reconstructed is east of the sharp turn. The construction will be done after school ends.
An authorization to advertise the renaming of Mill Creek Spur and a portion of Mill Creek Road was approved. The names of these roads will return to their original names. This will cause less confusion and not affect any addresses.
Authorization to advertise was approved for the prohibition of brake retarders along the Lower Macungie stretch of Route 100.
A resolution was approved for destruction of municipal records.
Township Manager Bruce Fosselman said the Community Days event was a success even though the weather was not great. He said Lower Macungie Community Center Coordinator Denise Foulke did a great job.
The township building has red brick pavers with a gray outline around the building. Many have complimented the township.
