Aerator ordered for fields

The Venti-Drain Deep Tine Aerator, discussed at the May meeting of the Northwestern Recreation Commission has been ordered. Donations were from the recreation commission, $13,515 and the Northwestern Youth Athletic Association, $5,000.

Northwestern Lehigh School District will pay the remainder.

The aerator will be the property of the school district but will be used on the recreation fields.

Facilities requests were received from the school district for May field days. Both basketball courts will be used June 6, 7, 8, 14, 13, 15, 20, 21, 22 and 27 for a high school basketball program.

Member Justin Smith said he received an email request for use of the lower Lions pavilion on June 25. A written request is needed for this one. All were approved.

Carol Betz has resigned from the scheduling position for the Lions pavilion. A letter of thanks will go out to her.

Smith said the bylaws commission is moving along. The NYAA repeated its request for a seat on the rec commission, but Smith said they are working on things in the bylaws that are wrong and will then consider adding.

Gary Blose will be paid $1,831 for cleaning and repainting the playground equipment at the Lions pavilion.

Frank Chukoski asked if the NYAA can post a sign at the rec fields thanking team sponsors and displaying their logos. He brought it to the meeting for rec commission members to see.

The Shell gas station owner is having a problem with people parking behind the station.

She cannot get out because of being parked in.

Commission members said they pick up trash several times a week. Smith said painting parking spaces may help. They will discuss with her whether or not parking can continue and under what conditions.

People from the rec fields provide business when they go over to the convenience store for drinks or snacks.

Member John Casciano asked about smoking at the fields. There are several signs but they are ignored.

He said he was surprised to see smoking in an area where there are children and asked if it should be addressed further.

A meeting is scheduled with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to discuss a grant for the walking trail. Smith will attend and take the map-sign that is kept at the school showing the plan.

Eric Andreus, natural resources manager for Nestlé Waters, stopped in following a Northwestern Lehigh Education Foundation meeting. He said he wanted to see what is going on and asked what the trail estimate cost is.

He was told it will cost approximately $80,000 and be paved.

“We started at $30,000 to $40,000 but has gone up,” said Smith.

“We might help you close the gap,” said Andreus. A previous Nestlé grant is already designated to go toward the trail.
