Inaugural “Rock-a-Thon” benefits cancer research

St. Ann School held its first ever “Rock-a-Thon” 8 p.m. April 8 to 8 a.m. April 9.

Fifty-eight students in fifth through eighth grades participated in the event.

Teams composed of three or four students were required to provide a rocking chair and take turns rocking in it for 12 hours straight. Each team member found sponsors to support him or her in the event, with a minimum donation of $25 needed to participate.

Students passed the time by enjoying music provided by DJ Mike Elwert, playing a variety of games, and watching movies. Parents and teachers served as chaperones throughout the event and provided encouragement, as well as snacks, to keep the students awake and motivated.

The “Rock-a-Thon” was developed in honor of Dr. John Mallon, the father of eighth grade student council member Jack Mallon, who passed away this year after a courageous fight with cancer. A total amount of $5,500 was raised in support of cancer research. The St. Ann Student Council presented the check to the Lehigh Valley Health Network.

Despite the long, late hours, all of the students were proud to support such a meaningful cause.
