Emmaus celebrates Memorial Day with parade May 30

The Emmaus Veterans Committee, in recognition of Memorial Day, will hold cemetery services 9 a.m. May 22 at Western Salisbury Union Church. On May 29, the veterans committee members will honor their comrades in each of the six Emmaus cemeteries. The ceremony consists of a short prayer service, rifle salute and taps. The ceremonies begin 8 a.m. at Calvary cemetery and then proceed to Old Moravian, Moravian at Ridge Street, Lutheran Reformed, Northwood and Evangelical at Second and Ridge streets.

On May 30, the annual Memorial Day parade will start promptly 9 a.m. from the Emmaus High School parking lot, continue to Chestnut Street and end at the Fourth Street Memorial Triangle where a program will be held. In the event of inclement weather, the program will be held 10 a.m. in the EHS auditorium. The veterans committee urges all veterans to participate with their posts.

The program for the Emmaus Garden Club’s May 3 meeting is “Head in the Clouds: What Clouds Tell Us” presented by Mike Davis, a Kutztown radio weatherman and climate expert. Davis will tell members about some surprising climate features distinct to the Lehigh Valley. The group meets noon with the program beginning 12:30 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church, North Second and Cherokee streets.

The Emmaus Senior Citizens group meets 1 p.m. Fridays at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Congregational Church, Ridge and Fifth streets. All senior citizens are welcome to attend. The meetings usually consist of light refreshments, a program and social time. The May programs are May 6: entertainment by musician David Loehr; May 13: a film; May 20: program to be announced and May 27 is game day. For information, call 610-966-4273.

The Emmaus Historical Society’s May 18 program will be a presentation about the May 10, 1935 Emaus plane crash when the single engine airplane piloted by Emaus resident Attorney Carl Iobst crashed into the South Second Street home of Paul Rinker and burst into flames. Additional information will be presented as it relates to the history of the society’s museum at 218 Main St. The group will hold an election of board officers and directors 7 p.m. prior to the program. The society meetings are held at St. John’s Lutheran Church’s parish hall, Fifth and Chestnut streets. The Emmaus Historical Society will hold a yard sale 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 218 Main St. during Emmaus’ June 4 community-wide yard sale. If you have items to donate to the society for the sale, bring them to the museum, 218 Main St., noon to 4 p.m. May 28 or 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 29. The group requests no donations of upholstered furniture, clothing or shoes. Proceeds benefit the capital campaign.

Emmaus Borough Council meets 7 p.m. May 2 and 16 in council chambers, 28 S. Fourth St. The budget and finance committee meets 6:45 p.m. prior to the council meeting. The offices will be closed May 30 for the Memorial Day holiday.

Compost center site hours are 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday; 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. or dusk, Wednesday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May to September. The center will be closed May 30 for the Memorial Day holiday.

There will be free Zumba sessions 9 a.m. every Saturday in May in the Arts Pavilion at Emmaus Community Park.

The Flag Day committee of the GFWC PA Woman’s Club of Emmaus will collect entries for the fifth grade poetry and eighth grade essay contests at the local schools. The entries will be reviewed by a team of judges and the winning entries will be selected to be read at the June 14 Emmaus Flag Day Association’s Flag Day program in Emmaus Community Park.

The GFWC PA Woman’s Club will host a luncheon for its round robin bridge and pinochle teams May 11 at Brookside Country Club.

The final meeting in the Woman’s Club’s 75th anniversary year-long celebration will be held May 23 at a picnic at community park. During the picnic, the club members will present the Emmaus Public Library with the tapestry woman’s club members wove during the library’s participation in “Woven Welcome.”

The mobile office at the Emmaus Public Library’s community room, 11 E. Main St., for state Sen. Lisa Boscola’s, D-18th, is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 23. All the children’s programs (afterschool, preschool and toddler story time; block parties, book clubs and explorers club) continue through May at the Emmaus Public Library. The family film matinee is 2 p.m. May 7. The PG-13 movie matinee is 1 p.m. May 26. Books and Barks, a program for school age children to read to the Lehigh Valley therapy dogs, is 6:45 p.m. May 26. Local filmmaker Stephanie Gardner will lead a summer film discussion series 6 to 8:30 p.m. May 25 on “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold.” The group will view the film and during the discussion, Gardner will explore the artistic choices filmmakers make and how each film speaks to a larger social issue of the time. Registration is not required. This program is free and open to the public.

The library will also host a basics in estate planning program 10:30 a.m. May 19 presented by Gross McGinley LLP. James Ritter, Esq. and Thomas Capehart, Esq. will provide an overview of how to best protect your assets and the people you love through estate planning. The library will be closed May 27 through and including May 30 for the Memorial Day holiday. There are no programs scheduled during this time and no items will be due.

St. Ann’s Knights of Columbus will host its monthly 50/50 cash bingo in the school cafeteria, 435 S. Sixth St., May 4. Doors open 7 p.m.; bingo begins 7:30 p.m. Tickets include a light meal, drinks and baked goods for dessert. The Remembrance Garden brick installation will be held 1 to 2 p.m. May 29 at the garden located on the Knauss Homestead grounds, 164 E. Main St.

Every year I look forward to the airing of the Freddy Awards. In case you’ve never viewed it, I can promise you will be awed by the musical performances of the area’s high school students. The program is shown 7 p.m. May 26 on 69 WFMZ-TV.

Congratulations to Emmaus Borough Manager Shane Pepe on his recent award of being honored as Borough Manager of the Year by the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.
