To the Editor:
I just read the East Penn Press article about the summer playground program in Emmaus [April 13 issue, page 1] and am writing to add my two-cents to keeping it going.
I raised six children in Upper Milford Township and they enjoyed the summer playground at Kings Highway School. I still have a potholder that was made by one of them and know that crafts were an important part.
Although my children are all grown, I’d like for Emmaus children to have this opportunity.
They need it for all the reasons given at the end of this article: “It helps kids appreciate this beautiful park and nature. It helps our working parents by offering a program that allows kids to strengthen peer relationships, have fun, exercise, learn to swim, and, teach social skills that go along with learning to get along with others. I believe children who attend the program are more willing to give back and respect their community when they are older.”
I can understand your decision because of lower taxes for Emmaus citizens. But we can pay enough to keep this Summer Playground going so they are not deprived of all the assets named above.
Make changes, YES, but do not cut it, even for one summer. That’s my plea! I’ll present the “petition with signatures” at next the council meeting.
