Nutrition, health and safety fair April 23

The Nutrition Group, East Penn’s food service provider, will present a nutrition, health and safety fair 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 23 at Lower Macungie Middle School. There will be information on nutrition and healthy snacks as well as health screenings and free food samples.

Friends of the Emmaus Public Library will hold the 18th annual used book sale 7 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. April 23 at the Lower Macungie Middle School Cafeteria in conjunction with the nutrition fair. A brown bag blowout will start 3 p.m. A book sale preview night for Friends members is scheduled 6 to 8 p.m. April 22. Memberships are available at the door.

The Lower Macungie Library book sale will be held 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 6 and 7. A bag sale will be held 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. May 7. A Friends of the Library member preview night will be held 5 to 7:30 p.m. May 5. All proceeds benefit the library.

The library is no longer accepting books for the spring book sale. Patrons are asked to save them for June 1.

The Friends of the Library will meet 10 a.m. May 21 in the library. This will be the last meeting until September.

The Lower Macungie “Lazers” Swim Team signups will be held 5 to 7 p.m. April 25 at the Lower Macungie Community Center.

The community center will host its sixth annual community day 4 to 8 p.m. May 3. Smokey Bear and other characters will welcome residents. There will also be representatives from many township clubs and organizations.

There will be a free document shredding event 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 7 at the Lower Macungie Township municipal building parking lot. The public is invited to shred up to four boxes of documents per household. The event is sponsored by state Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, R-134th, and Lower Macungie Township.

Registration for Lower Macungie Township pool swim lessons can be made by contacting the community center 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon May 3 and 17 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

Curbside collection of yard waste will take place the week of May 16.

The community center offers a number of activities. Some classes are held at the Wescosville Recreation Center, the Hills at Lockridge Community Center and Camp Olympic. For more information, contact the community center at 610-966-6924.

Family open gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site winter hours continue noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The site is closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Beginning May 1 the hours will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Be prepared to show your photo I.D. as proof of residency.

At the Lower Macungie Township Library, a sensory story time will be held 9:15 a.m. April 23. This story time has a special focus on providing an opportunity for children who are differently-abled to participate. A responsible adult must participate in the story time with each child.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. May 4 to discuss “Queen of the Big Time” by Adrianna Trigiani.

Messy Mondays for families will meet 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. May 2.

The library will host several events during Money Smart Week April 23 to 30. Representatives from various banks will discuss how to minimize fees, maximize returns and the credit/lending process.

The library will host a series of programs following the theme, “Latino Americans: 500 Years of History,” a project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. A cooking demonstration for empanadas will be held 6 to 8 p.m. May 10 at Northampton Community College. An Allentown walking tour is scheduled 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 21, starting at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum and including the Allentown Art Museum.
