A community forum on heroin and substance abuse prevention for residents of East Penn will be held 6:30 p.m. in the Emmaus High School auditorium. A panel, which includes county administrators, local law enforcement, treatment providers, medical personnel and parents, will discuss the growing substance abuse problem in the community. This event is open to the public. The East Penn Community Forum on Drug Awareness is designed specifically for parents and family members of high school and middle school students. It will include valuable information about recent drug trends including prescription drug abuse as a gateway to heroin use.

Emmaus Historical Society meets 7 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church Parish Hall. Program for the month will be a variety of old Emaus/Emmaus photos.

April 21

GFWC PA Women’s Club of Emmaus will hold a card party 11:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church Parish Hall, Fifth and Chestnut streets, Emmaus. A light lunch will be served. An art and gift basket auction to help feed the Lehigh Valley’s most vulnerable 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum, 432 Walnut St., Allentown. The entry fee includes small plates, beverages, live music and the silent auction. All proceeds benefit the Ecumenical Soup Kitchen of the Lehigh Conference of Churches. April 23

Scott Marshall and Marshall’s Highway will perform a concert 7:30 p.m. at Musikfest Café at ArtsQuest Center, Bethlehem, dedicated to raising heroin awareness and help those who try to help others receive treatment. The event includes guest speakers as well as guest musicians, including a Sweet Tequila reunion. Tickets can be purchased at SteelStacks.org.

The 18th annual used book sale, organized by the Friends of the Emmaus Public Library, part of a Community Day of Fun, will take place at the Lower Macungie Middle School, 6299 Lower Macungie Road, Macungie. The event will begin in the school cafeteria 7 a.m. when an estimated 18,000 pre-enjoyed books go on public sale. A special section of first edition and rare books will also be available for sale. The sale will shut down 2:30 p.m. for 15 minutes and re-open 2:45 p.m. for a “brown bag blow-out.” For 45 minutes, shoppers are invited to cram as many books as they can into a standard brown paper grocery bag or standard recyclable grocery bag (like those issued by Giant and Weis Market) and pay one price per bag. Shoppers are asked to bring a bag. Book sale proceeds benefit the Emmaus Public Library, located at 11 E. Main Street, Emmaus.

A nutrition health and safety fair, organized by Nutrition Inc., the food service provider of the East Penn School District will take place 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Lower Macungie Middle School lobby and parking lot. The public will enjoy free food samples and health information.

April 24

Cash bingo at Macungie Memorial Park, 50 N. Poplar St., Macungie. Doors open noon, lunch will be available. Games begin 1 p.m. Bake sale and gift baskets raffle also available. Bingo is sponsored by the Friends of the Macungie Institute. For more information, call 610-966-7830.

GFWC PA Women’s Club of Emmaus will hold its monthly meeting 7 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Fifth and Chestnut streets, Emmaus. The program will be “A Tale to Share” by storyteller Kathy Long. New members are always welcome.

Lehigh Carbon Community College will host the 13th Annual LCCC Foundation Scholarship clay shoot at Lehigh Valley Sporting Clays in Coplay. The event is open to the public and registrations are now being accepted. All tournament proceeds benefit need-based scholarships and grants for LCCC students. There is a registration fee. Entry includes 100 rounds of clay shooting, shells for the event, refreshments, awards and clam bake, courtesy of Sam Owens Restaurant. Participants each receive a commemorative souvenir. The Shelter House Society will hold its annual Patriots’ Day Dinner 6:30 p.m. at Citizens Fire House #2, 10th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Parking and entrance (with handicap ramp) is behind the building. Following a short patriotic program, “Pieces of Eight,” a girls barbershop chorus will perform selections from the early American barbershop traditions. The chorus is directed by Debbie Keretz, former director of the award winning Lehigh Valley Chapter of Sweet Adelines. Reservations are required for dinner and program.
