“Our play is a timeless and lively musical comedy with dynamic dancing, singing and acting for people of all ages to enjoy, with characters in an idealized and fictitious version of New York City where gangsters are friendly and endearingly lovable,” says director Jennifer Wescoe of “Guys & Dolls,” to be presented 7 p.m. April 6, 7, 8 and 9 and 2 p.m. April 10, auditorium, Freedom High School, 3149 Chester Avenue, Bethlehem.
“The dramatic musical piece involves specific and stylized characterization which provides a unique challenge for our cast of 41 students” from the Freedom High School Theatre Company, says Wescoe, who has directed Freedom shows for nine years.
Vocal director is Nancy Shumaker. Choreographer is Jerri Brown. Musical director is Michael Moran, who conducts an orchestra of mostly students. Costume coordinators are Linda Adams, Daria Hill and Pat Manicke.
The musical is based on stories and characters by Damon Runyon, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, and a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows.
The musical premiered on Broadway in 1950 and ran for 1,200 performances. It won a Tony award for best musical. Several Broadway and London revivals followed over the years. A 1955 film adaptation starred Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine.
The show’s memorable songs include “If I Were A Bell’’ and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ The Boat.”
