Residents dish the dirt on motocross track

There was standing room only at the Weisenberg Township supervisors March meeting.

Roadmaste Tony Werley and Administrator Brian Carl set up extra chairs to accommodate the crowd.

One of the items bringing residents to the meeting was construction of a dirt bike track along Carpet Road.

Jason Benson was the first to voice his opposition to the project.

He alleged Dominic Sumpolec, who rents the property, has a track on the acreage where motocross racers are trained.

Larry Onyskiw said the track will be run three times a week for the entire year.

This will generate a lot of noise and dust, Onyskiw said.

Bill Finley said the noise was as loud as a chainsaw.

Carl gathered names, addresses and email addresses to keep residents informed about what is going on and how the township is handling the situation.

The Lehigh County Soil Conservation Service is looking at the property for any possible violations.

West Hills Business Center was before the board to obtain preliminary plan approval for some minor lot line changes on property on Heffner Road and Sunset Drive.

Chris Fencel and Chris Dellinger, H.R.G. Engineering, represented the plan whereby three lots will be combined into one.

Also included for review was a site plan for new building construction.

A waiver was requested on the plan scale.

Chris Noll, engineer for the township; was satisfied with the waiver.

The proposal was approved by supervisors.

The Route 863 Bridge over I-78 will be closed mid-April for removal, with the work taking approximately two months.

PennDOT will install signs prior to the closing. Ramps will remain open.

The board was notified that the Grange property on Claussville Road is for sale.

At one time the township expressed interest in obtaining this building as a recreation center.

Supervisor Linda Gorgas was adamantly in favor of purchasing the property.

Supervisor Bob Milot, however, was not so keen on the purchase.

He noted that there would have to be about $100,000 invested in the property for repairs and upgrades.

Pastor Richard Fogel, who uses the building for Sunday services, said the building should be available for the entire community.

The church made an offer on the property.

Supervisor Tom Wehr cast the deciding vote on the matter.

He agreed with Milot and did not see acquisition of the property as a benefit to the township.

Supervisors adopted an ordinance to set the speed limit along Helffrich Road, between Siegfriedale and Independent roads at 25 mph.

The electronic recycling event will be held at the Weisenberg Township Volunteer fire station 9 a.m.-noon June 11 or until the truck is full.

The Rural Preservation Association’s annual SpringClean recycling event for the four Northwestern townships will take place 8 a.m.-noon at the Lowhill Township Municipal Building .

Bids for road materials will be advertised shortly.

Werley, who was lauded by the audience for his outstanding handling of the recent snowstorm, will submit a list of materials for the newspaper advertisement.

The bid for oil is currently available.

Carl, wearing his fire chief hat, informed the board volunteer firefighters responded to 37 calls this year.

Gerald Rusinko was concerned with the truck traffic on Route 863 coming from Route 222.

He said a sign had been placed at Route 222 advising the trucks about not using the road but he said there should also be a sign at Schantz Road and Route 863.

The annual report issued by Pennsylvania State Police for Weisenberg Township was submitted.

In 2015, state police tallied 982 incidents, four burglaries and 36 thefts.

Along with this, 118 accidents were reported- two which included fatalities.

Eighteen DUIs were reported with 13 of them from traffic stops while five were as a result of accidents.
