Brookfield Park improvements reviewed

At the March 21 Macungie Borough Council meeting, council members received a presentation on the Brookfield Park improvement plan by Bryan Smith, of Barry Isett & Associates, Inc.

Brookfield Park, 5800 Loyola St., has 14.8 acres of park and playground. With $17,000 of funds available for the improvement plan, $10,000 has been planned for the basketball courts and $7,000 allocated to updates.

Smith said proposed updates include the walking trail and playground equipment at a cost of $600,000. He said the commercial grade playground equipment is estimated to cost $49,000. It was suggested that cost be covered by residents, the First Impressions and Little Tree Child Care Centers via fundraising activities. The borough would cover approximately $30,000 in demolition work.

In other business, Mayor Gary Cordner said Solomon’s United Church of Christ, 82 S. Church St. and Grace Lutheran Church, 28 W. Main St., will ring church bells 175 times Dec. 11. The two churches were a union church 175 years ago on that date.

In personnel news, Kenneth Nicholson was approved as a part-time zoning and code enforcer beginning May 1. Nathan Killian, a former Wayne County detective was approved as a part-time police officer, effective immediately. Terry Heir was approved for seasonal employment. Council accepted the resignation of Troy Bower from the public works department, with regret.
