EMMAUS COLUMN Library’s April 23 annual used book sale offers books galore

The Friends of the Emmaus Public Library will hold its used book sale 7 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. April 23 in the cafeteria of the Lower Macungie Middle School, 6229 Lower Macungie Road. The sale includes about 16,000 pre-enjoyed books, hardbacks, paperbacks, children’s books and more, organized by category.

The book sale proceeds benefit the library, 11 E. Main St. There is a brown bag blow-out 3 to 3:45 p.m. Volunteers are needed to set up, staff and break down for the sale. If interested in volunteering, email birdscec@gmail.com with “book sale volunteer” in the subject line.

Also featured during the sale is the annual nutrition, health and safety fair organized by the Nutrition Group, food service provider for the East Penn School District. The nutrition fair runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features food samples, free blood pressure screenings, walk-around characters, demonstrations and more.

April 10 through 16 is National Library Week. If you haven’t been to the Emmaus library in a while, stop in and see what’s new. The library staff invites anyone who does not have a library card to come in during the week and get one. With a library card, which is free, you have the privilege of checking out Emmaus library’s books, movies and music and can enjoy the same privileges at almost any other library in Pennsylvania. The Emmaus Arts Commission has called for artists interested in painting rain barrels to enter in the commission’s Rain Barrel Art Silent Auction. The deadline to submit an application to participate is April 1. Interested artists should submit a sketch of their design accompanied by a short summary describing their proposed rain barrel art. The completed rain barrels will be displayed in June at the Farmers Market and other local businesses. Applications are available at www.emausarts.org.

The GFWC PA Woman’s Club of Emmaus is hosting the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Pennsylvania’s Northeastern District Festival of the Arts at a brunch April 2 at Brookside Country Club in Macungie. The event showcases art work by students and club members from 13 counties in northeastern Pennsylvania. The artwork will be judged during the brunch and winning artwork will compete during the state annual convention May 13 to 15 in Hershey.

GFWC will hold its monthly meeting 7 p.m. April 25 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 501 Chestnut St. The program will be “A Tale to Share,” by storyteller Kathy Long. The meeting is open to the public. For information: EWC PA@aol.com.

The Emmaus Remembrance Garden, 164 E. Main St., is a unique community asset. It offers a place to honor special people, things or events by placing a commemorative brick in one of seven dedicated walkways. The Emmaus Senior Citizens group meets 1 p.m. Fridays at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Congregational Church, Ridge and Fifth streets. The April programs are April 1: To be announced; April 8: a speaker on the history of the Emmaus Foundry; April 15: To be announced; April 22: a musician and April 29 is game day.

St. Ann’s Knights of Columbus will host its monthly 50/50 cash bingo in the school cafeteria, 435 S. Sixth St., April 6. Doors open 7 p.m.; bingo begins 7:30 p.m. Tickets include a light meal, drinks and baked goods for dessert. Look for the more than 400 runners on the streets in the vicinity of Emmaus High School April 10 during the Lehigh Valley Roadrunners annual Emmaus 4-mile Classic. Earth Day 2016 Community Cleanup will be held 8:30 a.m. to noon April 16. The event, organized by the borough of Emmaus and Upper Milford Township Joint Environmental Advisory Council, welcomes participation by community members from Emmaus and Upper Milford and other surrounding areas. The groups begin gathering for coffee and to get organized at Emmaus Community Park and then leave to clean up litter and debris from sites around the borough and township. The groups return to the park for lunch and educational community fun.

Electronics recycling is available at the park during the event (some fees apply). New this year is document shredding for households only and household goods recycling. For information, visit eacinfo@uppermilford.net.

Emmaus Borough Council meets 7 p.m. in council chambers, 28 S. Fourth St., April 4 and 18. The budget and finance committee meets 6:45 p.m. prior to the council meeting.

The compost center, Klines Lane, is open 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

Also, beginning April 4 the borough will collect yard waste curbside on Mondays and Thursdays (except holidays). Yard waste must be placed at the curb in approved yard waste bags which can be purchased at Wentz Hardware Store and other hardware stores. The April program for the Emmaus Historical Society is “Vintage Emmaus Postcards,” presented by Andrew Kerstetter and Richard Chartrand. The Shelter House Society’s Patriots’ Day Dinner will be held 6:30 p.m. April 30 at Citizens Fire Company #2, corner of 10th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. The program features Pieces of Eight, a girls barbershop chorus formed in 1992 by Phillipsburg High School’s music director Kathy Harman and Debbie Keretz, director of the Lehigh Valley chapter of Sweet Adelines. We said farewell to Emmaus Police Chief Dave Faust who retires March 25 after 30 years with the police department and 16 years as chief. It has been my honor to know him and work with him. I wish him happiness in the future.
