Yeboah makes the most of two years at PHS
It was around this time two years ago that Parkland senior Kenny Yeboah and his family made the move from Providence, Rhode Island, to Allentown. Yeboah wasn’t sure what to expect, and was a little nervous.
“It was tough because I was changing schools and was having to make new friends, and live in a big city,” Yeboah said. “Even though Providence is the capital, it is a smaller city. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I’m glad we made the move because we didn’t really have the successful teams there like we do here.”
Parkland sports fans are also glad the Yeboahs came to town.
On the football field, Yeboah, a 6-foot, 6-inch-wide receiver and defensive back, had 72 receptions for 1,160 yards and 14 touchdowns this year, and helped lead the Trojans to a District 11 4A title and a state final appearance.
The two-sport athlete was a starter on the basketball team that went 27-4, winning the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 4A crowns. Their run in the state tournament fell short in the quarterfinals to the defending state champions.
“It was a special year for me and my teammates and the Parkland community in general,” Yeboah said. “To accomplish what we were able to accomplish in football and basketball was really great. I became really close with all of my teammates. We were all like a family. I’m going to remember this for the rest of my life.”
With last Saturday’s loss, Yeboah can now focus solely on football. He signed a letter of intent to play at Temple University, and will head there to play in the summer.
“I’m excited,” said Yeboah. “It’s a great program, a great campus, and everyone around the team has been supportive. They showed they wanted me.”
Yeboah and his quarterback, University of Virginia-bound Devante Cross, will be working out together over the summer before they head off to their respective summer camps.
On the court, Yeboah stepped up this year and became a force on both ends of the court. He averaged 10.5 points per game, more than two points higher than a year ago. Yeboah also cleaned up the glass, grabbing near double digits in rebounds a game.
“We have a lot of guys that can score and play defense,” Yeboah said. “I knew I wasn’t going to have to be the go-to guy, but I wanted to be a contributor. So I worked hard on both ends of the floor because I wanted our team to be successful. I have fun playing with these guys.”
Yeboah came to Parkland with not many expectations, but will leave with four District 11 gold medals.
