Reihman shines at districts

Mahlon Reihman won two gold medals in individual events and set one district and pool record at last weekend’s District 11 Class 2A Championship meet at Parkland High School.

But that wasn’t the best thing he did at this year’s meet.

Heading into the final leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay, the last event of the two-day meet, Reihman dove into the pool three seconds behind the Mahanoy Area team that was leading.

Over the final 100 yards he made up that ground and gave his team a win by nearly a half second. The Falcon foursome of Daniel Bonge, Timothy Sechler-Stone, Ben Wiener and Reihman finished in 3:22.61 after coming in as the No. 5 seed at 3:38.63. Mahanoy finished in 3:23.10.

“As much as you want to be optimistic going in, it’s tough to do when you’re seeded 11 seconds behind the top seed,” said Reihman. “We pulled a classic Salisbury comeback there. I had doubts myself diving in. That guy was far ahead of me. I had time to watch him dive in and start swimming before I dove in. That was my fastest split ever.”

Reihman swam his 100-yard leg of the race in 45.47 seconds, which is faster than his winning 100-yard freestyle time and faster than the district record for the 100 free (45.87).

His teammates executed the game plan and the defending state 200-yard freestyle champ did his part.

“We needed kids to get me within a couple seconds so I could have a shot to come back at the end,” he said. “That was the goal.”

The win earned the group a berth into this year’s PIAA Championship Meet, which will be held March 18-19 at Bucknell University. It also helped the Falcon boys secure third place in the team standings.

For Reihman, it capped a golden weekend in which he won gold medals in 100 and 200 freestyle while setting a pool and district record in the 200.

Reihman’s first individual event of the meet was Friday’s 200-yard freestyle where he was the top seed at 1:47.62. He dropped over seven seconds and finished in a District 11 and Parkland pool record time of 1:40.7.

“My goal time coming in was the district record, which I knew was a 1:42.2,” said Reihman. “I ended up breaking the pool record, which was something I didn’t know I had it in to me to do.

“It’s easily the best record I’ve ever broken. This is a pool where there have been a lot of fast people to come through. It feels amazing. It’s the greatest pool record I’ve ever had.”

Reihman also won the 100-yard freestyle on Saturday, swimming it in a time of 46.05 seconds.

The junior will move on to states, but he has already surpassed the goal times he had in mind for the state meet. Last year Reihman, who did not shave and taper for district this year or in 2015, went to states and dropped two seconds from his district time in the 200.

“I’ve got to reset my goals now,” he said. “It’s exciting knowing that I have more to drop when I fully taper and fully shave for states. I didn’t shave and taper coming into the district meet last year either, but I was much faster in the same circumstances this year as I was then. I’m excited to see what I can put up at states.”

When asked what he hopes to do at states this season, Reihman said “to walk away with gold in both (100 and 200). This is kind of a stretch, but the 200 free state record might be 1:38.7. I think if I taper well, get a good shave and rest it’s in my reach.”

One other Salisbury swimmer earned individual gold at districts.

Bonge took first place in Friday’s 100-yard butterfly. He entered as the No. 2 seed at 54.61 and swam the event in 52.6 to beat second-place finisher Ryan Schreffler, a freshman from Nativity who swam the final in 53.57.

“He had me going into the first 50,” said Bonge. “I was able to beat him. I kind of pulled a Michael Phelps. I watched his race that day. That always inspires me. I think that’s why I was able to pull off that win.”

Bonge also took second place in Saturday’s 100 backstroke, finishing in 54.40 behind winner Mark Boran (53.43) of Blue Mountain.

Falcon freshman Sarah Bobeck earned three medals with a third- and fourth-place finish in individual girls events to go along with a second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Bobeck and teammates Kaleigh Bobeck, Brooke Rogers and Rachel Costantini were seeded fifth with a time of 1:52.9. They swam it in 1:46.27 for second place at districts.

“It felt great to get second because we weren’t expecting to get it,” said Sarah Bobeck. “We wanted to make podium, but getting second was just awesome.”

Sarah Bobeck placed third in the 50 freestyle in 25.35 and was fourth in the 100-yard freestyle, swimming the event in 55.29. She was pleased with her first district meet.

“Coming into it as a freshman I wasn’t expecting much,” Sarah Bobeck said. “I’m so excited with the results I got and I can’t wait for next year.”
