Lindberg Park improvements authorized

Bid specifications will be developed for $500,000 in Phase III improvements to Lindberg Park in western Salisbury Township.

Township commissioners voted 5-0 at the Feb. 25 township meeting, on a motion made by Commissioner Joanne Ackerman and seconded by Commissioner James Seagreaves, to approve measures to retain Urban Research and Development Corp. for the design, drawing and bid specifications for Phase III at Lindberg Park and authorize URDC to develop a grant application for Phase IV at Lindberg Park.

Phase III is budgeted at about $500,000 with $242,000 of that amount a grant received from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

As part of the motion, commissioners set a fee limit of $67,000 for URDC on the project.

Phase III includes a new restroom, pavilion and playground.

Phase IV, the final phase of the project, includes improvements to the parking lot, with a drop-off area, as well as pickle ball courts and a splash pad.

“We have the money to do it?” Commissioner Debra Brinton asked.

“Yes,”Cathy Bonaskiewich, Salisbury Township assistant manager-director of finance and acting manager said.

“Do we have any [surveillance] cameras to put in the park?” Ackerman asked.

“We would like to put cameras in all the parks,” Salisbury Township Chief of Police Allen W. Stiles said.

“I think we should start with Lindberg,” Ackerman said.

“I agree,” Commissioner President James A. Brown said.

The cost of Lindberg Park improvements is estimated at $3 million.

Work on the Lindberg Park Master Plan began in 2011, based on the township parks, recreation and open space plan.

Public hearings on the Lindberg Park Master Plan were held during 2012.
