Conditional offer made to hire police officer

Salisbury Township is planning to hire a police officer who, if the process is completed, will bring the police department to its full roster of 18 officers.

The township board of commissioners voted unanimously 5-0 to approve a conditional offer of employment to Jason Harrison, a Summit Hill, Carbon County, police officer since June 2015.

Commissioner Debra Brinton made the motion to bring the motion to a vote. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Vice President Robert Martucci Jr.

Harrison, 24, a Lansford, Carbon County, resident, received a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice from West Chester University and his Municipal Police Academy certificate from the Delaware County Community College.

In a Sept. 2, 2015, article in the Times-News, Harrison was credited with helping a stranded motorist. Harrison reportedly changed a flat tire on the woman’s car.

According to the newspaper article, Harrison was on patrol when he saw the woman’s van on the side of the road along Lentz Trail. He used a car jack from the patrol vehicle to change the tire.

The new officer would replace a township police officer who resigned.

Harrison passed a written test, an interview with Salisbury Township Police Chief Allen W. Stiles, a background check and a physical agility test. A psychological test and a physical exam will be administered.

The hiring of two additional police department officers, which was approved as a 2016 township budget expenditure, is expected this year.
