Supervisors pursue open space referendum

Upper Milford supervisors are continuing to seek more information before deciding whether to put an open space referendum on the ballot in 2017.

The idea of the referendum was the main topic of discussion at the Feb. 18 supervisors meeting. While supervisors didn’t make a decision, they directed township staff to come up with a list of properties in the township which would be appropriate for preservation, and the possible costs.

They would be looking at land good for farming, supervisors Chairman George DeVault said, with the objective of buying development rights for that land either outright or in coordination with state or county land preservation programs.

In order to pay for such a project, the board is considering a referendum on the ballot in 2017 to approve a small tax increase dedicated to open space preservation.

“There’s a lot to it,” DeVault said, adding there would be extensive public education prior to any referendum.

Francis Caputo, chair of the open space committee, said his committee will be helping with that educational effort by preparing a flyer to be mailed to all residents.

In other action at the Feb. 18 meeting, supervisors confirmed two members of the Western District Fire Company as fire police. They are Donald Smith and Jason Marsch.
