LHS girls top FHS

Liberty High School’s girls’ swim team scored a 128.5-57.5 victory over Freedom last Thursday, but nothing could spoil the thrill of Senior Night for the Patriots.

“It’s kind of unreal,” Freedom senior Bridget Tarnowski said. “Some of my best friends were seniors who left. I thought I’d be able to hold it together.”

The Hurricanes won the most individual events, including Jocelyn Baker in the 200 free with a time of 2:03.37, Julia McCarthy in the 200 IM with a time of 2:13.66, Maggie Walters in the 50 free with a time of 26.37, and Kayla Drago in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.09.

Maddie Young won the diving event with 227.75 points for Freedom, and Reilly Ward took first place in the 100 free with a time of 57.17.

Baker won the 500 free with a time of 5:28.43, and Sabrina Krotzer placed first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:07.79, also for Liberty.

McCarthy won her second event of the night when she placed first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.66.

The Hurricanes won the 200 medley relay, the 200 free relay, and the 400 free relay.

Rileigh Ellis, Andie Graney, Alex Koehl, and Ward missed first place in the 200 free relay by less than one second.

“We knew we would have to rebuild this year,” Tarnowski said, “but Coach Jon always emphasizes the little victories, and we’ve been coming together as a team and focusing on the positive.”
