State police investigate mortgage scam in Berks

State Police Troop L Reading are investigating a mortgage scam which affected a couple who live along Chestnut Road, Maxatawny Township, Berks County.

They reported being scammed out of money between Nov. 14-18, 2015.

According to Trooper David Beohm, public information officer with Troop L, the couple were contacted via telephone by an employee of Best Rate Financial, a company that claimed to offer mortgage adjustment services.

They accepted the offer and followed instructions provided by Best Rate Financial to begin the process, which included sending a check in the amount of $4,391.

They also disclosed other personal information including Social Security numbers and bank account information per the application process.

Over the course of the last year, the couple have discovered Best Rate Financial is essentially a scam and have not been able to recover their money.

During the investigation, state police contacted the FBI and learned Best Rate Financial is under investigation and several arrests have been made.

The company allegedly defrauded a thousand individuals across several states.
