St. John’s finds Falcons’ Kamp

Besides playing soccer for Salisbury at the high school level, senior Jordan Kamp also plays club soccer for Continental FC Delco. That team possesses over a dozen of recent Division I commits that will continue their soccer careers at the collegiate level.

The Division I recruits include schools such as Saint Joseph’s, Loyola, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Holy Cross, LaSalle and Hartford. One of her teammates went the Division III route in choosing Gettysburg, a premier squad at that level of competition.

Kamp was one of those Division I commits and recently signed her letter of intent with the rest of her Continental FC Delco teammates in Philadelphia exactly two weeks ago. She will play soccer at St. John’s University.

While she didn’t make it official until recently, Kamp gave a verbal commitment to St. John’s back in April of 2015.

“I always wanted to go south because I do not like the cold weather at all,” Kamp said. “But St. John’s kind of found me because they were looking at another girl on my team first…They saw me and reached out to me in January of that year.

“I still didn’t know what I was really going to do at that point. And then they reached out and it was kind of just them ever since that point.”

Kamp, who also garnered interested from American, George Mason, Temple, James Madison, Bowling Green, Campbell and Gettysburg, had the luxury of getting the decision out of the way early.

But committing early also threw her a couple of hurdles along the way, all of which she managed to overcome.

“But it’s also kind of the curse of committing early because you kind of take a backseat and you start to relax a little bit,” Kamp said. “That was something I had to deal with, making sure I still worked hard and keep doing what I’m doing and not take a backseat because I’m already taken care of.”

Kamp certainly didn’t relax on the soccer field. She collected 136 saves this season in guiding Salisbury to a 10-8 finish and a district tournament appearance. Her single-season high came as a junior with 158 saves in net and finished her career with 408.

And after four years of high school soccer and even more on the club circuit, she’s switching to the college scene for another four seasons. But even after her junior season ended, the school she will soon call home wasn’t even in the cards.

“I honestly had no idea St. John’s even existed until January [of 2015],” Kamp said. “Once I visited that March it was kind of like, ‘OK this is where I want to be.’ It was the best option for me at that point.

“The campus is a perfect size. I didn’t want anything too big or too small just coming from a small area. It’s sort of separated from the city so I still have my campus feel, and then I can also go into New York City and experience that type of thing. The stadium is amazing. It was probably the best part of the whole campus.”

Wherever Kamp decided to continue her collegiate career, one thing remained constant.

“A big thing for me was being able to have my family see some games,” Kamp said. “The fact that it’s the Big East, you play at Villanova, we play scrimmages at Temple and Drexel where they can still see me.”

The Kamp family will get to continue that luxury of seeing Jordan play in college. This time it’ll just be in the red and white of the Red Storm, not the blue and white that Salisbury fans have grown accustomed to seeing her in over the past four years.

Kamp was a three-year Colonial League First Team all-star. She is credited with 18 shutouts and five assists.
