Walking Purchase Park Cleanup April 26

The Salisbury Township Environmental Advisory Council reviewed a full agenda at its January meeting, including several upcoming events and the need to fill a vacancy.

The vacancy is the result of the resignation of longtime EAC member and vice chair Glenn Miller.

Miller’s resignation was announced at the Jan. 20 EAC meeting in the township municipal building.

Residents from Ward 4 who would like to be considered for the appointment were to download and complete an application form from the township website and mail it along with a resume to the attention of: Cathy Bonaskiewich, acting township manager, 2900 S. Pike Ave., Allentown, 18103, or email to cbonaskiewich@salisburytownshippa.org.

Kreg Ulery was nominated by EAC member Jane Benning to continue as EAC chair.

Newly-appointed EAC member Rodney Conn was nominated by Benning as vice-chair. Both appointments were approved by EAC votes.

Mary Anne Stinner was renominated to the EAC by township Commissioner Joanne Ackerman, board of commissioners’ representative to the EAC.

In other business, Township Director of Planning and Zoning Cynthia Sopka has completed the EAC annual report for 2015, which was to be reviewed by EAC members prior to its presentation to the township board of commissioners.

EAC-sponsored events include:

Rain barrel workshop. April 2, to be held in partnership with South Whitehall Township. One hundred barrels are to be donated by the Coca Cola Bottling Company of the Lehigh Valley. Residents attending are to receive a free rain barrel.

Lehigh Mountain Walking Purchase Park Cleanup, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 26. Information is available on the township website.

Salisbury Township’s second annual Earth Fair Celebration, 10 a.m. to noon April 26, Lindberg Park. There will be educational activities for adults and children, including presentations about composting, creating a sustainable culture, Bird Town, recycling and hazardous waste.

Sopka narrated a PowerPoint presentation about the township’s stormwater management program with the theme “When it rains, it drains.”

Among topics discussed was discharging of water from pools or spas, which must adhere to Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection guidelines.

The EAC next meets 7 p.m. Feb. 17.
