LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Musikfest ‘16 poster has folk-art theme

With its sunny disposition and hand-painted style, the 2016 Musikfest artwork focuses on the creative essence of the festival, as well as the event’s main attraction: music.

The acrylic work was created by Philadelphia-based painter and illustrator Gina Triplett, named one of Print Magazine’s “20 under 30 New Visual Artists.”

“The subjects of my painting all tie in to Musikfest’s location in Bethlehem: The Hill-to-Hill Bridge, SteelStacks, the natural beauty of the Lehigh Valley’s nearby mountains and Musikfest itself,” Triplett said.

“The style I used drew from my own interests. I have a love of folk art, and from the way those interests align with the heritage of the area. My painting is my own adaptation of the German folk art found throughout Pennsylvania and parts of the Lehigh Valley.”

Triplett is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, where she studied Illustration. After college, she and her husband, Matt Curtius, a painter whom she met while studying at the Maryland Institute, lived in New York before settling in Philadelphia, where they now live and work. She has worked with editorial clients including The New York Times and Rolling Stone, and has illustrated books for nearly every major publisher, including Random House, Little Brown and Penguin. In addition, she has created posters for Apple, gift cards for Target, and even a signature shoe for Converse.

When she’s not illustrating for her clients, Triplett also works collaboratively on paintings with her husband. Their work can be found at ginaandmatt.com.

Triplett’s art will be featured on the Musikfest 2016 website, poster and festival mug, while also being incorporated into other official Musikest merchandise and apparel throughout the year.

The 33nd edition of Musikfest is Aug. 5-14 with more than 500 performances on 16 stages in Bethlehem.
