Speed limit change on Main Street and Chestnut Street passage
The topic of the new speed limit signs were brought up at the Emmaus Borough Council meeting Jan. 18.
New speed limit signs were installed last week along the Main Street and Chestnut Street passage in Emmaus. The speed limit was lowered from 35 mph to 25 mph.
The concern of lowering the speed limit came after 11-year-old Abbie Zukowski was hit and killed while crossing Chestnut Street last year.
Councilman Wesley Barrett said you can definitely feel the adjustment when you lower your speed to 25 mph.
“I was actually surprised at how much you feel yourself pull back. I would think that would be a benefit to the community.
Mayor Winfield Iobst noted he has received phone calls thanking the borough for lowering the speed limit.
Amy Huber emailed council to thank them for lowering the speed limit and their hard work. Back in July, Huber raised over $800 at a fundraiser to help pay for the speed limit signs.
Council voted 7-0 in favor or giving $1,500 to the Joint Environmental Advisory Council. The advisory council will give the money to the Lehigh Gap Nature Center to help fund Earth Day and help provide plants to various recycling vendors that will be providing a range of services throughout the borough. The Nature Center received a grant which will allow the borough to be reimbursed $1,000.
Robert Boehmer and Kathleen Prindible resigned from the Emmaus Arts Commission. Both of their terms end in February.
Liesel Gross resigned from the Emmaus and Upper Milford Joint Environmental Advisory Council. Her term endsMarch 2017.
Ordinance 1136, which deals with the “codified ordinances involving the Civil Service Commission rules and regulations,” passed its first reading.
Resolution 2016-4 passed 7-0 which approves the preliminary and final subdivision plan for 217 Main Street.
